One Shots: Snow joke

I ask for “weather” in a screenshot challenge and you all give me lots and lots and lots of MMO snow. I guess we’re all in that frame of mind right now!

Reader Tyler sent in this adorable little picture of someone not buckling down and leveling: “Recently I’ve been revisiting Aion to check out the Awakened Legacy patch. At one point I ventured into an area with heavy snowfall and was delighted to see my character begin spontaneously trying to catch snowflakes and generally frolicking. I thought it was a wonderful little moment — more MMOs should be the effort in for things like this.

“As an aside, this is also pretty much how I react to snow IRL, except instead of an adorable quasi-Elf girl I’m a dumpy twenty-something man with too little hair, so the effect is altogether less charming.”

If Tyler would only have looked over to the side, he might have seen Toy Clown racing past on a giant chicken. And if Han Solo taught us anything, it’s that large animals transporting us across frozen wastelands are perfect sleeping bag material.

“Just the other morning my character and her chocobo were out for a snowy ride in Final Fantasy XIV,” Toy Clown said. “It was a celebration of sorts since I was finally able to afford a sweater.”

That statement’s going on the back of FFXIV’s box!

Zulika went demon hunting in a very familiar — and notorious — location: “A late and old/new/odd entry — Snowing in Hell…gate London. I was never sure if this was an MMO before, but it sure isn’t now so I am not sure if this counts. Anywho, the new Steam single player version is my current time sink.”

I’m including it because I don’t think we’ve ever had a Hellgate pic here before.

“It’s the Eye of the Vortex, it’s the thrill of the flight
Risin’ up on the back of my giant turtle”

*wipes a tear from my eye* Hirku, you… you are a poet of this modern age.

Above all of the weather and chaos sits Ryuen, who chuckles at our misfortune and manipulates global events without us knowing.

“Considering the title of last week’s One Shots there is no way I could hold back this screen from Elite: Dangerous, having just earned my Sol permit I of course had to visit Earth,” Ryuen said. “And before you ask, yes, I can see my house from here.”

This week’s screenshot challenge is what I’m going to call “old favorites.” I still find myself screenshotting places and things that I have seen countless times before, because maybe this time I’ll get a better angle? Or something? I’m betting some of you have done that too, so show us some of those pics you’ve taken time and time before.

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

In Elite I’ve been taking my new explorer ship ‘Wanderer’ on her space trials, just a little jaunt to Witch head nebula in preparation of heading out into the black soon.

I figured I’d share the obligatory ‘spaceship in front of a nebula’ shot, in this case Barnards loop as seen from the Witch head nebula, as well as outside and inside shots of the first asteroid base I’ve come across.
You’ll have to excuse the UI in these but I find E:D’s freeform camera a bit too fiddly to mess around with in the middle of an asteroid belt.

I never really liked the North Downs in LOTRO, but since getting the lick of paint recently it has some nice areas.

An old one I still quite like: my Hobbit peacefully farming some pipeweed in the Shire.

The view of elven buildings across the river from Celondim in LotRO always makes me want to take screenshots of it. Never have managed to catch just the right angle/lighting/etc. to do it justice of how pretty it is in game.

What a wonderful shot!

Celondim is a good example for how MMOs can create long-lasting memories. My first LOTRO character, and still my main, started her journey of many many years in Celondim and I still fondly remember doing the first quests of this journey in the hills above Celondim.

“old favorites”

I do believe Star Trek Online could benefit greatly from a graphics overhaul, when it comes to the actual avatars and ground missions. Still, the starship/space combat still looks pretty fabulous. At least the astrometrics portion was redone a couple of years ago, and the images can be quite lovely.

I started a new captain this past week, and always enjoy taking a few shots of my Constitution-class cruiser in sector space.

Something everyone has already seen? Perfect, since I was just playing on one of the LotRO progression servers last night and thought the Elf starter area, past the introduction, was just gorgeous.

Celondim is one of those places that usually tempts me to break out the screenshot button when I’m there.

Two places which my screencaps gravitate toward in Blade and Soul.

The first is Sky Petal Plains. Oh, it’s beautiful greenery and landscape, but the real reason is that I get some photogenic big bastards to watch my back.

The other is Necropolis. The city of dead. Which, ironically, makes for some lively atmospheric caps.

I was originally going to take a shot of Conan Exiles sandstorm last week, but it doesn’t photo well. You need to see it in action at a distance.

As for this week, I don’t normally post screenshots of cutscenes here. Mostly because I don’t consider that my art. That’s someone else’s lighting, positioning, etc.

But I DO take a lot of screenshots of the same cutscenes over and over.

Usually, it’s because I want to get a shot in a particular set of clothing or because I’m getting ready to tweet something. So here are a bunch of shots from (T)SW(L)

Yes, these are all from the same cutscene (both games). Can you guess which one?

An old favorite and one that took me ages to get right…
