You won! It doesn't count!

The conclusion of Final Fantasy XIV’s expansion story starts today with the launch of patch 4.5, A Requiem for Heroes. Players can log in right now to start exploring the details of the new MSQ and be treated to the various revelations awaiting therein, as well as the conclusion to the Return to Ivalice quest line and a variety of new furnishings and new glamour items.

The patch also brings with it the inclusion of Mahjong, which a recent development entry explains in detail for those unfamiliar with the very concept of Japanese Mahjong. The game mode was actually added due to director and producer Naoki Yoshida’s fondness for the game, with the core of the mode developed by another studio and ported to FFXIV. Check out the patch trailer just below, read through the patch notes if you haven’t already, and get ready for the end of the expansion (or the first part, at least).

Any ideas or word on what is coming in March? or is that something we’ll probably here or see at the next fan fest or director’s letter?

Speaking of which, I rather enjoy the letter’s and director pod casts for this game, they seem more personal as opposed to a podcast of devs talking about their upcoming content. Not sure what it is, but it’s awesome none the less.

Just the finale to Stormblood’s MSQ and Hildibrand stories are all we know about for 4.56, “Part 2.”

However, in about one month, we’re getting Hydratos and the new Rival Wings map in 4.55.

Very nice story tied to the whole ivalice raids. I also think Miqo’te’s days are numbered as the most popular race…

I hopped in just for an hour and a half or so before work and got to try out some of the new Gold Saucer stuff:

1. Air Force One is amazingly fun and an 11/10 minigame imo. It’s the right blend of challenging while making it still possible to achieve a perfect score (I ended my first run with all targets hit but I hit a single bomb on accident).

2. Doman Mahjong has potential but doing a 20-40 minute match with NPCs only to get absolutely nothing out of it is offputting. Every Gold Saucer activity is supposed to reward MGP, and the time you have to invest into one session of this minigame is around the same as doing a dungeon or raid. If I have to spend potentially several hours practicing with NPCs and get nothing out of it beyond a better grasp/understanding of the game for the PvP varaint, that’s a major turnoff, especially because winning seems to be luck-based in some ways.

Overall I’m excited to still sink my teeth into other parts and maybe try getting deeper into Doman Mahjong, but there just doesn’t seem to be much/any incentive to spend that much time on it right now.

The last two bosses of the Monastery 24-man alliance raid were phenomenal! Probably some of the coolest designs/tactics they’ve produced. My static was pretty awestruck :)

So, looks like we know what the two Viera tribes are going to be.

Don’t click if you consider NPC flavor text to be spoilers.

thanks! my friend said he hoped one of the tribes was gonna be a short race because he thinks they need more and I hate short races. I waved this in his face hehe

Story seemed pretty cool until I hit a hard stop when the new dungeon unlocked, since I’m 10 below ilvl requirement oops.
