Ship of Heroes says its character creator is a ‘huge step up from games like City of Heroes and SWTOR’

We’re just about to see the launch of a character creator tool for our second superhero MMO of the month, as Ship of Heroes’ tool launches for backers on Friday. Ahead of that release, Heroic Games has dropped another trailer, this one showing off body morphs, from wee to massive and everything in between – in fact, the devs say their system is a “huge step up from games like City of Heroes and Star Wars: The Old Republic.” Gauntlet thrown. Again.

As we’ve previously noted, you’ll need to have chipped in $50 total to leap into this beta come Friday. “The character creator Beta will begin November 1st, and will last for a week,” the studio says. “Participants will be able to take their newly-created characters into the game world and explore the first zone, Apotheosis City.” The devs say they “expect several hundred supporters to try out their artistic toolkit, and […] have also planned a couple of events to occur in-game during the Beta.”

The new trailer and pics are below!

I would hope a game made today would have a character creator that is better than a game originally launched in 2004, or even 2011…but that’s me.

Perhaps they’re telling us the game proper is graphically on-par with COH and SWTOR, in which case the point is well-made. Perhaps there is a very good reason they didn’t compare themselves to Black Desert Online.

I don’t know about CoH, but SWtoR has one of the worst character creators I have seen. Saying something is better than that isn’t really something to brag about.

Not a very bold claim, to improve on old games. How will it stand up against modern competitors? And will the body come to life… will the sum be greater than the parts? The world will learn more in November, but my impression from the previews is that this character creator, like that of City of Titans, could benefit from a range of good presets made by people with an eye for character design. Right now it seems to have a single default for female and two for male, and then lets the players loose with a crate full of tools. Most people are pretty bad at DIY character design, and I fear this will be visible in the game.

That’s a bold claim vs. CoX, against SWTOR, not so much. I mean as far as options, CoX is showing its age for sure, but SWTOR, while having more variety than WoW, isn’t exactly amazing in that aspect.

A lot of these CoX successor games just have these dead looking characters in their creators, sure CoX looks dated but at least it has its own style, these just look so generic.

They are probably thinking of great outfit options, which is what CoH and SWTOR excel at, but you can’t really see that in these examples, most likely because those will be in the cash shop, so they aren’t really doing a great job promoting their game.

I am thinking a dozen of sliders that move a nose 1 pixel left or right may not enhance the character creation process

It’s fine to be proud of what you have but to stoop to throwing shade… what are they compensatin’ for?

I don’t know…something seems to be awfully missing from the CC, IMO. I think it’s the ability to create character.
