Final Fantasy XIV will be down for 24 hours for patch 5.3 maintenance

Get anything you need to have done in Final Fantasy XIV done before August 10th. Anything you want done before the patch, at least, because that’s when patch 5.3 comes roaring on to the game’s servers with a 24-hour long maintenance window. Yes, it starts at 6:00 a.m. EDT on August 10th and ends at 6:00 a.m. EDT on August 11th, meaning you’ll have to muddle through a day without any chance to log in and run around at all.

Obviously, with the sheer volume of content arriving in the patch, we’re sure everyone will manage just fine. This is also a rather long-delayed patch due to pandemic-induced delays, if you had missed that; according to producer and director Naoki Yoshida the original plan was for the patch to launch in mid-June, but the difficulty of adjusting to work from home has resulted in a lengthy delay until its actual launch of August 11th. But considering the new dungeon, alliance raid, and storyline wrapping up the Shadowbringers arc (among others)… well, we’re sure everyone can bear the waiting.

I see they did cancel the Halloween event this year due to Covid.

24 hour downtime for a patch sounds like a lot for a AAA game like this. I hope they at least reimburse a day of play time since it is a subscription game.

Aside from pruning down the MSQ, they’re also adding flying to the original areas. I’d assume that was a fairly substantial undertaking. :)

Has any detailed info come out on the supposed revamp that 5.3 was supposed to bring to the 1-50 questing/storyline system? I just remember them stating that it would help remove a lot of the tedium, grind, and back and forth that made it such a drag.

The exact specifics of what objectives were changed is probably more a topic for patch notes, but I seem to recall that they said they cut something like 1/3 of the post-50 ARR quests.

They said they cut 13%

The revamp will go live as part of 5.3; They have discussed quite a lot about it in previous live letters and updates, but “detailed” information will have to wait until the “real” patch notes this weekend.

According to what we’ve heard/read: The 1-50 Main Story Quests (MSQ) will award more basic XP than before, and 10-20% of the quests will be trimmed or deleted… this means things like “Chase Tataru around Limsa Lominsa for no apparent reason” quests SHOULD be deleted or shortened to make them less tedious. The goal is to make the A Realm Rebord (ARR) 1-50 leveling less tedious and difficult, and make it easier to get to expansion content (Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers).

Note that, as of right now, the “end” raids of the MSQ (Castrum Meridianum and Praetorium) are still there, and they will merge the three Crystal Tower raids into the MSQ as a requirement to advance (as they play into the lore of later expansions)

According to what we’ve heard/read: The 1-50 Main Story Quests (MSQ) will award more basic XP than before, and 10-20% of the quests will be trimmed or deleted.

They’ve only given one percentage, and it wasn’t related to what is being streamlined/trimmed.

What they indicated was that 13% were removed from the MSQ entirely (no detail on exactly which ones, except that they were ones they felt didn’t “damage the story” or change it in a significant way), with a later interview clarifying that they were moved to optional side quests.

The rest is getting streamlined to be less tedious, but we simply don’t know how much of a percentage that knocks off compared to what is in the game now. Yoshi-P’s comments to seem to point at them having looked at *every* quest in the ARR MSQ to see where they can shorten them (and those comments seem to point at it largely being in the steps and objectives…small changes across a couple hundred quests makes for a big change in the end kind of thing) but we really won’t know a specific percentage until we can go through it and compare steps from before with those that will be required after.

And the only reason I’m pointing this out is that there are legitimately like 5 versions going around regarding what they are doing to the ARR MSQ, and none of them reflect accurately what has been said by the devs so far (some are close, at least one has been waaay off).

“with a later interview clarifying that they were moved to optional side quests.” – this completionist is happy

Ive tried twice now to get into FF14.. Ive got the game and all the expansions. My last attempt my summoner got to level 58, but i was still stuck behind main story quest missions from ARR!!!! So frustrating. I was well beyond the level of the base game, but couldnt move on to the expansion.

AND, after I hit level 5, I ONLY did main story quests or quests to unlock things like dungeons or game features. None of the side missions.

Im worried now that by them increasing the MSQ xp value, it would only make the matter worse. Im already 8 levels higher than the max level content for the base game, but cant proceed to even the FIRST expansion because ive still go MSQ from ARR to do!!!

They’re making it higher because they’re cutting a lot of content from the MSQ. So while you will get more XP per quest, there will be less quests.

However, the looming issue has been that new players want to advance to the current content immediately and this doesn’t address that fundamental issue.

I love FFXIV, but this is a waste of resources. They need to make the store bought story skips…part of the game or give some alternative to skipping over content. The best solution would have been some method to separate out the MSQ by expansion so you can start Heavensward at 50 regardless or 2.0 progress, stormblood at 60 regardless of heavansward content, etc.

This reeks of a common problem of “We made something cool and now EVERYONE must experience it.” and it’s only going to continually dwindle the population of people in the latest expansion content.

As it stands, you can’t get someone new to play the game without dropping money on level/story skips or spending 2+ weeks (depending on how much they play) going through old content.

Why would someone who is genuinely interested in playing want to skip 80% of what the game has to offer just to “skip to the end”?

I’m not buying the whole “to play with their friends” argument. Your friends can help you level (this game is designed specifically to facilitate that, i.e. the duty finder).

That means you will have plenty of side quests to level your next job with.

If that’s NOT the definition of a “first world problem” ; IDK what is…

(But hey, I play FFXIV too) ;)
