Guild Wars 2 studio ArenaNet appears to be suffering another round of layoffs

It looks as though ArenaNet is suffering a fresh round of layoffs, as Jennifer Scheurle, a lead designer on one of the Guild Wars 2 company’s other in-development games, announced on Twitter that she’s been let go “as part of a re-shuffling of projects.”

MMO fans will recall that at the top of 2019, ArenaNet suffered heavy layoffs as 143 people were turned out from the company as a result of NCsoft restructuring. While Guild Wars 2 itself reported an increase in its team size and NCsoft clearly decided to reinvest in the game (the End of Dragons expansion is proof of that), the unannounced games on the company’s roster were reduced, though we continued to see rumors of new games cooking, including a new mobile and console title.

It’s not clear which unannounced games have been “reshuffled” or canceled, what impact it might have on Guild Wars 2 itself, or how many developers were affected. As always, our sympathies lie with the rank-and-file developers harmed by the move.

Update 10/15
The outpouring of support from other studios is heartwarming this morning.

If this was widespread, you think their would be lots of people tweeting about it.

But it’s literally just one person. (as at time of this comment). And this twitter guy saying “annual layoffs”.

Evidence seems a bit thin tbh.

Slow burning dumpster fire… Should shut down and let someone else make a proper GW1 sequel.

You should get right on that. People always seem to have criticisms, but very few solutions.

The person tweeting wasn’t even working on Guildwars 2? It was some unannounced title.

Just be clear, 1 person was laid off due to what they said is a reshuffle? Are there others? The Dev in question has been in the news in this region over the summer for not the best reason.
Let’s see further info before jumping the gun of doom and gloom.
But I guess this is how news goes even in the MMO space.
Well for any of the good people that are laid off a lot of dev companies are fully embracing remote work at least on all the head hunter opps I’ve received.

Yeah I was kind of looking for evidence of more than a single layoff, not saying it didn’t happen and their tweet does imply it but nothing is concrete.

Out of curiousity why specifically was this dev in the news “for not the best reason”?

I just searched for her name and you’re right, she was involved in pretty controversial stuff regarding false accusations of some people. I can see why ArenaNet would want to fire her first if there are new layoffs going on, most companies do not really want to keep controversial people once they become known for such behavior, regardless of how talented the person is at their job. I’m sure she’ll still find a job very quickly, though, because some companies don’t really care for stuff their employees say on personal Twitter accounts and because the controversial stuff she did is not widely known and she deleted most of stuff she posted.

Yeah reading up on that developer was painful.

It’s clear that GW2 is their cashcow, and they are suffering because of it. This situation where GW2 keeps the lights up but doesn’t bring more is expected but maaaaan, does it suck.

I think this is something that will force the studio to try to broaden the type of player that plays GW2. I expect new features for the next xpac.

You’d have to pay me much more than you’d want to as a game company to even come close to tempting. I just can’t stand how they operate by and large and how unstable they are.

Eh, some companies always lay off people and some others hire them, it’s just a natural process. Regardless of the reasons GW2 studio laying off people, there are plenty of positions available for studios that keep actively expanding, like Intrepid Studios or Zenimax. I’m sure a talented game developer will not have to look for a long time to find suitable job.

I really hope Scheurle and any others affected can land on their feet sooner than later. It’s awful to imagine having your life suddenly and cruelly upheaved like that, especially if you have to worry about something like a visa on top of your livelihood.

I don’t know what this means for ArenaNet, but it’s certainly a bit tiring seeing this kind of thing coming out of the company so often over the years. Sucks for the workers for sure.
