The Daily Grind: Are you a map completionist in MMOs?

A few weeks ago, my husband was playing Guild Wars 2, and suddenly he sat back and declared that he’d finally, after all these long years, hit 100% map completion on the original game on his day-one Elementalist. Yes, I know this is not a novel accomplishment, nor does it really take that long for someone dedicated to the task. But it wasn’t his singular goal or even his main game; he just chipped away at it on the one toon whenever he had some spare time and felt like doing it, and eventually, he finished.

I haven’t map completed in GW2 myself; the last MMO I was really motivated to do that was World of Warcraft, ironically. I love exploring, but sometimes I get annoyed by the idea of exploration as a checklist. Still, it’s so satisfying when you check that list off!

Do you try to explore every map in your MMO? Does whether you’re rewarded for the accomplishment affect your motivation to do it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
