Star Citizen raked in higher profits over the month of June and the second quarter

One might suspect that the month of May would have been a big one for Star Citizen’s piggy bank owing to the Invictus event – and you would be right – but the month of June was also a strong one fiscally speaking for the game, as data from a funding dashboard show a sizeable increase to profit over the course of the last month.

June 2024 saw pledges increase by $7M, a 7.4 percent rise from the same time last year, capping off a big second quarter that saw a total of $37M raised, which is 13 percent higher YoY. Total funding for the game has now pushed well north of the $700M mark.

As for the number of new players, June saw over 22K new sign-ups – 35 percent fewer than June 2023 – but clearly the ones who are hooked into the game are spending.

With all of this money flying around, it’s important to bear in mind the financial thumbscrews that CIG is still under as pointed out by fellow blogger The Nosy Gamer, who guesses that sales would have to maintain a 27 percent average in order to keep up with costs and reminds followers of a major investor group’s potential to pull out by 2025.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $700M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
