Of everything that’s been newly announced during Gamescom so far, Bohemia Interactive’s SkyVerse caught my attention quickest as a the type of cute voxelbox trying to push the Minecraft subgenre forward into the future. Developed by Enjoy Studio and published through Bohemia, the game is meant to be a “novel take on the RPG and sandbox survival genres,” with a “first-person perspective, along with the opportunity to set out on an adventure unlike any other.”

SkyVerse is a voxel sandbox RPG with a first-person perspective and an open, auto-generated world,” the studios write. “Players take on the role of an airship captain in single-player or multiplayer co-op modes and travel through a detailed world filled with floating islands that are open for exploration. The game combines elements of combat, crafting, and RPG character personalization, and offers a fully destructible environment that provides players with complete freedom to traverse, build, and survive. The game will offer full support for cooperative and multiplayer modes, allowing players to explore the endless world together with friends.”

The game is already on Steam for wishlisting, flagged early access (and planning to be there “at least a year”) but not available yet.

“Every basic, important game mechanics will work on Early Access launch. Both singleplayer and multiplayer gameplay will be possible. We are aiming at a very strong Early Access, not a half-complete beta. […] We plan to introduce gradual content updates over the course of Early Access. Those will include both our planned improvements/extra features and changes brought by community feedback. Namely, the development goals include: more variety of items for crafting (both tools and decorations), new enemies, new islands and a farming system!”
