Fan recreates classic Guild Wars’ Ascalon City in RPG Maker

Remaking your favorite online world in a different program seems to be a hobby of some fans, which is why we get (for example) World of Warcraft redone for MineCraft or Ultima Online popping up in Wurm Online’s environment. And ReWorld certainly has a lot of potential to being sculpted into the fashion of favorite past games.

But what about classic Guild Wars? Is it being left out of this party? Perish the thought! Over on YouTube, amateur game designer Jomo recently showed off his progress in remaking ArenaNet’s original game using the RPG Maker toolset. While it’s not done yet, the game at least includes Ascalon City and a fateful meeting with good ol’ Prince Rurik.

Give it a watch after the break and let us know — inspiring homage or pointless endeavor?

It’s come a long way from two years ago, when the project looked a lot more Final Fantasy-ish:

I dont see a point of this other than for self learning.

Isn’t this game still actively available on NCSoft servers? I can see remaking games that have been discontinued, but it seems a stretch to do this with one that is currently being maintained by the parent company.

Never expected to be on massively!

I love it! There is something really special about the original. I’d love for Anet to bring back the old GW in GW2. It’ll never happen, but a guy can dream. Unless of course he’s you! You can just make your own! xD

Haha I’m afraid I won’t ever be able to match the original. But that was never my goal with this project. I just want to put Guild Wars in a classic single player rpg game.

I too loved the original as it was my first online rpg. But I also really love GW2 for different reasons.

You did great work! I clicked on it the other day and the pre-searing music washed over me and just like that I put it in our newsroom. We HAD to cover you. :D

Haha I know what you mean. I’ve been struggling to keep working on this in my free time rather than creating a new character and playing. I look forward to relaxing again in pre-searing once I get the demo released here soon-ish.

So, they didn’t mess with the combat yet. It should have either character animations, or 3rd person.

That being said, Ascalon looks great. RPG Maker is just tons of fun <3

I really do enjoy rpg maker. It definitely is fun. Everything is actually done with my current iteration of the game. I just have to implement the art and collision in the maps. Which takes awhile. And then random polish after that before I release a playable demo.

The combat is just default rpg maker first person turn based. But it definitely looks a lot better than that video I recorded a few years ago.

Wish you used the old versions, i’m a sucker for 2k and 2k3.

Did you play the classics? the Legion Saga trilogy, Exile, Alter Alia? I should go back to that life
