E3 2019: Black Desert announces Great Expedition expansion and adorable Shai class

Black Desert brought the good stuff to fan con Heidel Ball this weekend thanks to a slew of announcements about new content inbound for the MMORPG.

First, Pearl Abyss revealed that the game is picking up a new class, the tiny “mischievous halfling” called the Shai. “Using her Boomerang and a variety of skills focused on both evading danger and aiding her friends, the Shai is quite unique compared to other classes,” the studios write. “This is further emphasized by the fact that the Shai is the only class to start at ‘professional’ levels in the Alchemy and Gathering life skills.” Players can pre-roll a Shai starting on June 19th. (No, we don’t know when all of this is launching for real.)

The companies have also announced a new expansion dubbed The Great Expedition.

“A new expansion named ‘The Great Expedition’ will see the introduction of new wind and current mechanics to the ocean of Black Desert Online. Traversing the high seas will now become more rewarding to players that can skillfully utilize the winds and current to reach their destination more quickly. The addition of new islands to the ocean and new ships will give players even more reasons to explore this new content. The new islands will have special trade mechanics and players can use one of the new trading-focused ships to transport goods between islands, making a nice profit in the process. The new islands are easily distinguishable by their unique themes, but finding the correct one will require navigations mastery within the new current and wind mechanics.”

There’s more, of course, including the new PvP-based Altar of Blood: a new, smaller take on the Savage Rift mechanics but linked to the Star’s End content. And PA is likewise working on balancing passes for grind spots (love that they call them that) and upgrades to the UI and life skills. One down note? The O’dyllita region and territory war content have been postponed for now. Check out the whole trailer below!

Coming back to BDO after a 1yr hiatus. Graphics remastered, music in several cities redone, and story parts rewritten. Many new features and areas. The developer isn’t just keeping the game alive with events; they’re actually enhancing the game as it grows larger. Enjoying my 2nd playthrough and reading through NPC/environment stories now. Really appreciate what they’ve done.

Shai are pretty kawaii, suprised I missed news about the new expension. Love the visuals of new locations, but let’s see how it plays first)

I’m excited for the Shai class. I will be redownloading the game closer to the release of the class. I wish the trailer had some actual combat gameplay of the class, but I’m intrigued nonetheless.

This thread has gotten wonderfully quiet somehow. Can almost hear the birds singing…

…that said, I for one are looking forward to this update. And that’s saying a lot, as I haven’t been really all that interested in BDO at all. o.O

Considering the trend of how oversexualized the other characters are in this game, that’s a hard pass from me.

A few of the armors you can buy in the cash shop sure… The characters in general with their normal armor are not in the least over sexualized.

The Shai is absolutely adorable and I love that they use a boomerang for a weapon. They have lots of features that I like and want to play, too, so I’ll be rolling one up. They seem like a great class to explore with as Play Dead will have lots of uses! There is a lot of exciting content coming and I’m especially excited about more sea content and that they’re putting in winds and tides to make a difference in sailing the ocean. Sounds very immersive.

So kah-yoot! Honestly, this is the first thing that kinda makes me want to check out the game. I really enjoyed that trailer!

It seems Shai is a group buffer. Perhaps the devs decided to dive into classic RPG group composition instead of every class being DPS, tank, healer in one.

That’s the direction it looks like they’re heading in, adding more group content. If they can manage to create a fun version of group content, I think it will bring a lot of new / returning players to the game. It was the biggest gripe players had when they left the game.

Pre-roll is typically 3-4 weeks prior to actual launch.

Odd that they made the Shai class all female since they are a race and have male, female and androgynous characters.

All classes thus far are a particular “character” among that race more or less. So it is just the way they handle it.

I understand that, having played BDO since launch, but Shai is their race. It doesn’t make sense as a class name.
Rangers and Archers aren’t called Elves.

If you look into the lore of the race they are considered predominately female largely because males of the race are a rarity. You don’t really run into many male Shai outside of Florin and the like. Given their general average life span and the fact males are a rarity lore wise it doesn’t make sense for a male to become the “adventurer” type.
