The Daily Grind: What are the most common studio fibs we tolerate in the MMO genre?

Buried in the comments of a WoW Factor column a while back, MOP reader Nathan expressed skepticism over claims about being able to full gear up on basic heroic dungeons: “I’d bet a whole lot of money upgrading all the way from heroic dungeons to mythic gear will require so much more effort than doing mythic raids as that it’ll be sorta like saying, ‘You can play Neverwinter entirely for free.'”

I want to riff on this idea – not on anything specific to WoW or Neverwinter but on Nathan’s observation that we tolerate a certain amount of fibbing from MMORPG studios. They’ll claim the game isn’t pay-to-win, but we all know it probably is. They’ll claim a free-to-play player can access everything, but we know it’d take 30 years of grinding to be true. They’ll claim PvP is balanced and fair, but by that they mean is they need some sheep for their wolf community. They’ll claim to be accessible and casual-friendly whole toting around a massive hardcore endgame, or they’ll promise to follow a guiding manifesto and chuck it out at the first opportunity.

I’m sure I’m missing some. What are the most common studio fibs we tolerate in the MMO genre? What’s the worst?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
