MMOs You’ve Never Heard Of: AQ2 Expanse, Project Baxter, Tombstone

Welcome back to another quick roundup of MMOs and MMO-adjacent multiplayer titles you’ve (probably) never heard of! In today’s edition, we’ve got an indie spaceship sandbox, a co-op Dungeons & Dragons title with a weird codename, and a self-described futuristic western MMO. Let’s take a look!

AQ2: Expanse – If you’re looking to get into something like EVE Online but made by a single indie dev, then you may be interested in what Seven Point Red is cooking. This sequel to multiplayer mobile RTS AQ: First Contact promises a significantly larger scale (and a release on PC as a result), real-time battles, plenty of trading either through a legit market or a black market, and a single persistent universe that houses hundreds of players.

Project Baxter – Starbreeze Entertainment, better known ’round these parts as the studio behind Payday 2 and Payday 3, has locked down the rights to create this new co-op multiplayer title set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Details are still slim, but it’s projecting a 2026 release “on all major platforms,” will feature crossplay on launch, and is promising to bring “cooperative and community driven experiences, ‘play it your way’ and infinite replayability.”

Tombstone MMO – Lastly we have yet another 2-D pixel art indie MMO effort from a fellow named Gooby. Set in a climate post-apocalypse, Tombstone tries to fuse Fallout and RuneScape together into a futuristic-western RPG, with two islands to explore and 24 skills to train in its current build. The game held a second closed alpha last week but currently has no timetable for launch. It does invite interested players to its Discord for more.
