MMO players have been worried and frustrated over the state of Camelot Unchained for ages now, but we’re finally getting some movement.
Readers will surely recall that the Kickstarted MMORPG led by Mark Jacobs’ Unchained Games (fka City State Entertainment) has been in a slow-burn beta for years, partly because the studio was also working on a second game called Final Stand Ragnarok. In 2024, the devs said they had funding to launch CU in 2025 after a demo last summer. Instead, at the end of 2024 the studio announced a “temporary suspension of external playtesting […] until the build is stable and polished enough to show you the progress we made and not just a giant construction zone” with more “early next year” – i.e., now. But that timeline was muddied when we learned Unchained Games had laid off nearly half of its devs and backers issued legal threats.
Well, if you had any bets out that Unchained wouldn’t resurface, you just lost ’em, as we now have a brief memo signed by Mark Jacobs himself and titled Change is Coming to Camelot Unchained.
“It’s been quite a while since I last communicated with you and I’ve got good news for you all. As you know, the team retooled our efforts last year on Camelot Unchained, and we’ve made a tremendous amount of progress since we last shared an update. As April draws to a close I will present the updated CU in my return to livestreaming on the Unchained Entertainment Twitch channel. I could talk forever about the changes, upgrades, and visual improvements that the team has made but I’ll let you, our Backers, judge our efforts to date when you see the video that we’re putting together. As always, the videos will be our usual ‘what you see is what you get’ type with minimal editing but I will say today it involves castles, new environments, and some visuals that I hope will surprise you (in a good way). And also as always, there’s more to come. I look forward to seeing you again soon and sharing with you our vision for what’s coming next for you in Camelot Unchained!”
Well the next two weeks just got more interesting.
