Wargaming’s new OARPG Pagan Online launches next year

Pagan-tastic, I guess.

Grumpy over Diablo Immortal and Diablo III? Path of Exile not your cup of tea? Maybe give Pagan Online a peek for your clicking fix. Developed by Mad Head Games and Wargaming, it’s an “intense action RPG” with a “pre-Christian mythology” setting and MOBA inspirations, slated for a PC launch next year.

“The game is developed with an ambition to bring new meaning to the ‘Action’ part of Action RPG, introducing intense and exciting session-based combat that rewards players for being smart and skillful. Character progression incentivizes building and developing a ‘family’ of many unique characters, rather than one character with multiple builds. Combinations of gear, skills and characters will offer synergies that deliver more than the sum of the stats, and can be put to the test in challenging boss fights and other modes. Pagan Online’s combination of storytelling, procedurally-generated arenas, and multiple choices that lead to different encounter types create the feeling of a living and changing world, where every day and fight is different from what came before.”

There’s not much to the website right now, but you can sign up for the testing phases if you like. According to a Venture Beat piece last month, the game will be run with a buy-to-play model and will indeed feature co-op and “other online components” akin to the Path of Exile live service, hence the “online” in the title, though it’s not entirely clear what sort of scale the multiplayer is on.

Hmmm. Sounds like a lobby game, from which you do missions. While combat is important in ARPGs, so is story. Curious to see how they will create story from MOBA missions. One the other hand, if D3 had created an unfolding story with rifts, it might have given the game more life.

Mad Head Games makes hidden object games, which do require some storytelling chops to be successful. Some HOGs are quite involved and looking at Mad’s library, they’ve done some well-known and regarded title series such as Cadenza.

Luke warm on this at the moment. Wolcen and even The Last Echo are ahead of this one for my interests.

The “pre-Christian mythology” thing seems to be all marketing. From what I have seen the game uses either fictionalized versions, or else entirely fictional gods. Nothing seemed even based on history at all to be honest. Otherwise though the game seems awesome and I’m glad someone’s finally doing a PvE game with MOBA gameplay.

To the extant I can say anything without breaking NDA: I’m rooting for this one. The MOBA combat works better than you’d think it would in ARPG gameplay and I’m eager to give it more hours than I’ve been able to so far. If they can stay away from any RNG-based monetization I think there’s an audience for this. Here’s hoping!

The sound schema is intense ;) Not sure I am any wiser as to the details of what the game is about. Co-op how, is it zerg or actual co-op ? lobby based dungeon crawler or a mmo with a world ? Does it have depth or just some asian crap with nothing but flashy effects ?
But anyways, intrigued .. tell me more.

I’ve been playing Path of Exile a lot lately (hell, I’m standing in Sarn Encampment RIGHT NOW while I write this) and… this just looks really, really slow. Not sure I’m okay with that. We’ll see, though.

With the amount of time i have put into POE over the last couple of weeks, i think i will be ok with a slower game as long as it’s good.

PoE looked, and was, that slow when it released. The Path of Exile 2013 was not the same one we have today.

I really hope it has a strict PVE content …. Seeing moba puts me off.

I love a good APRG, playing through Grim Dawn again as we speak. I’ll definitely give this a go.

It’s weird they used as their final climatic end of video shot an elevator calmly landed where it was supposed to. Worst cliffhanger ever.
