Free Realms Sunrise devs show off incredible progress in bringing back a sunsetted MMO

Free Realms is dead — long live Free Realms Sunrise!

For the past few years, this emulator project has endeavored to return the beloved family MMORPG that ran from 2009 to 2014. While Free Realms Sunrise isn’t ready for a full-fledged release, the volunteer team behind it is excited to show off the progress that it has made on the MMO so far.

According to a short video, fully customizable characters, mounts, housing lots, emotes, and questing are all fully active. It seems to have made a big impact on the game’s alpha build.

So where’s the project at right now? “We’ve ended our closed alpha,” the team reported. “This doesn’t mean we’re entering beta, though. Now is just simply not the right time to test, while more focus is being put towards development. You can’t play something that isn’t ready, after all!”

Give the progress video a quick watch below and see if it might trigger some fond nostalgia in you!

This is one of the games I liked so much that I bought cash shop coins but never spent them.

Then they switched things up and changed the game so that you couldn’t get past a certain level without paying. It was a very disappointing move but I guess even that didn’t save the game…

I’m eager to see what the new team does with it. I’d love to have this game to play with my daughter.

This is a game I’d like to see come back from an actual major studio in full force. I guess that will never happen, but it’s one of the few on my wishlist for that to happen to :D I suspect most of us have a wishlist of games we’d like to see going again that are no longer officially supported.

This is one of mine. I have another game I really think would do extremely well today on mobile, Faunasphere. It was a casualty of appearing near the crash of the browser game and uprise of the mobile game. It didn’t run very well on Flash either. I so feel that it would be a major force if brought back to be on mobile today. That’s a different game and a different subject I guess, just seeing a game like this one that is on my wishlist brings those thoughts up :D

So looks to me like they still need combat, gathering, and crafting. Judging this from the videos.
The choice to end closed alpha seems odd though, unless they’re struggling to pay for the servers maybe? I don’t know. I used to enjoy this game back in the day and would love to see it be returned, if only to help preserve it.

I don’t know, conventionally? Yeah, it would be odd to declare an end to alpha without having functional combat and the like in it…

But this isn’t conventional. Crafting, Gathering, and combat isn’t something that will need constant iteration, it existed already. Until they announce a beta period though, the game would still be under a technical alpha. Before they started implementing the major mechanics like the mini games associated with the crafting/gathering stuff, they probably wanted to make sure the game world itself was stable and could support NPC and player activity. And if I had to guess? I think that stuff will likely be in for the ‘Beta’ period as they’ll need to fine tune everything to get it feeling right… and you can honestly only really do that once you have players actively in the game.
