TennoCon 2019: Empyrean connects Warframe with railjack ships and ‘raids’

Ever since teased at TennoCon 2018, players have been eagerly awaiting Warframe’s Operation: Railjack, now called Empyrean. What Space Ninja doesn’t want to adventure out in open space, flying their own multiplayer ships and boarding enemy ships? TennoCon 2019 highlighted that with a long chunk of live Empyrean gameplay on stage.

During the gameplay, fans were treated to a close look at a customizable railjack battleship as it flies into a space battle, along with some accompanying new features. The fight moves from ship to space to ship as combatants boarded and took control of the enemy battleship. As the battle progressed, players got a taste of two other key features of this update — the Kingpin (VIP) system and the squad-link system. The former is a personal nemesis in game your actions create. The latter is Warframe’s answer to raiding, allowing a railjack to call on friends to aid by completing an objective elsewhere  in the universe that directly impacts the railjack’s mission in real time.

And that’s just scratching the surface. Check back with us for a deeper look into these systems as our TennoCon coverage continues.

Although there wasn’t any mention of a release date this time round, everything’s looking very solid and feature complete (at least on the surface), so am hopeful we maybe might get it this autumn?

So excited by the depth and scope of systems on display, the ship customisation (both cosmetic and functional), modular Archwings and all Archwings getting Blink!

Squad link and the nemesis system seem like huge deals, but I have so many questions about the details of how they’ll work…

My one big concern with Empyrean is over how well it’ll work with PUGs and their potential criticism of the squad host’s ship and loadout and argument or lack of coordination on who takes which roles.

The only date they gave was that The New War is planned for Christmas, but most people have concluded that Empyrean is supposed to be out before The New War. (Since full-sized Sentients are even bigger than the Eidolons, we can’t meaningfully fight them without the Railjack, or so the theory goes.)

And, yeah, I’m definitely curious how they’re going to get matchmaking to work with Railjack.
