Robot!

Patch 5.3, Reflections in Crystal, arrives in Final Fantasy XIV on August 11th after an unusually long delay. But if you need to see a trailer to feel like this is a thing that’s really happening… well, the trailer is here now! And it covers a lot of what you’ll see in the patch, including the Bozjan battlefield, the new dungeon, the second YoRHa raid in the Puppet’s Bunker, and even teases about what will take place in the main story including more starshowers and what appears to be a dark fate befalling the Crystal Exarch… but who knows what all that means?

Well, people who aren’t playing don’t know what all that means, naturally. But now it’ll be easier to find out, because the patch is also making the game’s free trial much more welcoming. Players will now have access to the entire game up to level 60, including Au Ra and the Heavensward MSQ, as part of the game’s free trial. The same trial limitations as before will be there, but this means that you can more easily explore what’s considered the high-water marks of the new expansion as you find out if the game is for you. There’s a lot to look forward to in the next patch, it seems… even if you’re not one of the game’s current players.

Trial update is cool, I’m ever amped for the Nier stuff and all that jazz…

But how is nobody talking about the ‘Mecha’ combat entrance at 1:14? That lead-in feels like Early Gundam so strongly that I… I am just all in on that. It’s almost criminally like the sound that plays with Amuro Ray’s Newtype sense goes off!

I know it likely isn’t going to account for a whole lot but… God… just like the Brute Justice, it’s hitting my mecha nerd nostalgia hard. We’ll probably only see it once or twice too… but…

Like… I just want more good mecha in my RPGs.

That’s not the first (or only) UC Gundam-like mech fielded by Galamond in FFXIV. (It a Japanese game so it’s rife with all types of Anime tropes all over – it’s part of the charm of the game for me as an old anime fan.)

Oh definitely. It’s notable for me here at least because it’s just such a… complete reference. The beam saber igniting with a flourish, the pose, and the aforementioned sound effect with it on top of us actually getting to pilot (play as) the Weapon (mech) just hits especially hard.

Just a quick note about the Southern Front (Eureka 2.0), from the slides and the wealth of information they provided it looks like they took all the feedback and complaints to heart.

AFKers won’t be able to participate in the critical engagements, you can use your mount from the get go, special actions will be available from the get go, there is actually a duty finder inside the instance for the content within and you can use it to level your alt jobs (xp rewarded applied outside the zone)–which I assume was added since we aren’t getting a Deep Dungeon this expansion. Lastly, you can do content outside the zone and have it count towards your weapon upgrade. Looking forward to it!

I wish it was a F2P option rather than a ‘trial’ option. Mainly because I cannot use it on my current account and would have to make a different account. Would love to see the new leveling path and may sub for a month to try it out. Or, I may make a throw-away account. Oh well.

“A Realm Reborn/Starter Edition owners are also being upgraded with the above!” Would be strange if they didn’t let everyone with an existing account access up to 60. By the sounds of it, it is effectively F2P old content, they just didn’t want to call it that.

Maybe it has changed. I read the site info on the trial and it stated that the trial would only be valid on accounts that did not have any registered content. Guess will just have to wait and see. ;)

That is super generous for a trial!

Agreed, that is at least 50-60 hours worth of content for free right out the gate.

I am expecting the biggest bait and switch with the Exarch dying but then you know who back on the source wakes up with his memories.

Probably w/o the memories, but with knowledge and control of the Crystal Tower. So we lose his future self, but get the old but enlightened one back. We’ll likely return to the Source with the know-how to unlock the CT and wake him and tell him of the adventures he had, heh.

While a level cap increase from 35 to 60 Heavensward MSQ also included. Not a bad update to the Free Trial. That is a fairly good chunk of game content there.

Enough I’m tempted to try to figure out making a second account (I have a Starter with free Heavensward, only subbed like 1-2 months and Lv 20s-30s, but a non-Trial account nonetheless.) I’m a slow player so ‘F2P’ FFXIV til Heavensward, with restrictions but a paying friend who could start parties with me, draws me in.

I wish they’d just B2P ARR+HW at this point though. It doesn’t taste well that I’d be subbing just for some chat/crafting/guild functions with how slow I progress content.

Once I found out you could unlock every job in the game on one character, I never understood some people’s desire to make other characters. That’s because for me some of the hoops you have to go through to unlock areas of content are like pulling teeth.

I do think FFXIV is one of the best MMOs out there, but it’s certainly not without its issues; and yeah unlocking the various chains of raid content and some of the other things is sometimes very tedious in my opinion.

To each their own though.

In FFXIV’s design I see no reason to have more than 2-3 characters. Like I can see some purpose in having a publicly known community character, and a private no-friends character. I also understand aesthetics, like focusing one character to aim for certain loot and activities to wardrobe into like, say, an archer mode easier and sooner, but another character on a journey to be the ultimate crafter. I will never understand ALT-ITUS in FFXIV though. Its just not built for that.
