The Daily Grind: Should MMOs make more effort to corral likeminded gamers?

I’ve mentioned before that my husband has been playing a lot of Destiny 2 lately (fillin’ the ol’ Overwatch void), and it’s led to my having a new appreciation for some of its mechanics, some of which I’d like to see borrowed back into MMORPGs.

For example, he showed me that when you zone into the central seasonal event right now, the game asks you whether you want to merely explore the new zone or focus on the seasonal public event, thereby ensuring that you’re more or less slotted in with other people who want roughly the same things you do, and folks aren’t disappointed because they wanted to rush the bosses but everyone else in the zone is standing around.

You’re essentially picking a playstyle role, and I can’t help but think games like Guild Wars 2 with its emphasis on open world content would be improved by this. MMOs ask us whether we’re willing to tank or be leaders, but seldom do they ask us whether we want to play with casuals, go slowly for newbies, roleplay, or rush a boss.

Should MMOs make more effort to corral likeminded gamers?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
