Make My MMO: Star Citizen is hosting parties for space whales (October 7, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding, I hope you’ve got your special black Star Citizen VIP card because CIG has invited concierge-level backers — sorry, space whales — to what it’s calling the first of many “pop-up parties” this coming Tuesday near its LA, Austin, Frankfurt, Wilmslow, and Derby bases. The studio’s also issued its monthly report, which coincides with the latest Around the Verse, during which it was revealed that the long-delayed alpha 3.0 is finally in the hands of the Evocati player testers. (Thanks Josh!)

Meanwhile, Valiance Online confirmed sidekicking, Crowfall discussed its soft launch checklist, Dual Universe hit pre-alpha, The Exiled extended its free-to-play trial, and Shroud of the Avatar delayed its launch.

Stay tuned for more from FrontierExpo as MOP’s MJ is there checking out Elite Dangerous!

Read on for more on what’s up with MMO crowdfunding over the last week and the regular roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following.

That’s the only kind of hunting of ‘whales’ I support – ‘whaling fleets’ of MMO studios and companies tracking them down and making a profit out of it. ;)

Look, I know the circle jerk on this site about Star Citizen, how it’s a scam, and how people spend their money on it can be fun for a while, but this is seriously getting old when it’s even getting into the titles of articles now.

I generally like the MOP community, but this is the one aspect that I don’t really care for. It’s every single article on Star Citizen, and it continually eggs on DS to do what he does. The way I see it is: if the game comes out, fine, we have a highly ambitious game that made it to launch. If it doesn’t? Well, then all the naysayers get to say “I told you so” as they have been crowing about for years, and a good portion of backers get disappointed, like any crowdfunding project.

The rest of us smaller backers? The ones the typically don’t say anything? Well, for us, it’s a lesson of “well, I was inspired by this game, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I didn’t invest all that much, so it’s not like a big loss for me anyway.” And that’s it. That’s all I have to say on the subject, and this is the only time I’ll talk about this.

i mean massively reports on other companies’ whaling efforts in their revenue schemes and what it means for the industry and consumers. and it’s a hot topic on social media including this week with shadow of war and swbf2′ revenue models.

so why would massively exclude star citizen’s unprecedented in teh industry whaling operation? so that fanboys don’t get their feels hurt and rush to harass and brigade this site it’s staff and it’s commenters as retaliation for the perception that we somehow hate the game and want to ruin it forever somehow?

on social media and reddit consumers complain an dbitch about far less predatory revenue schemes as being the worst behaviour ever from gaming companies in far more rabid fashion than any of the reporting or comments on this site. so maybe just maybe the fact that this company sends out invitiations to it’s biggest spenders to have amway MLM style meet and greets to get them to spend even more money is news worthy?

roo woods

I wasn’t aware Star Citizen had an infinite improbability drive in it .

What am I talking about the whole project is an infinite improbability drive .

I could go for a nice cup of tea…

Douglas Adams never gets old. :)

Pssst, there’s an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk to you about this MMO project they’ve worked out….

Uhh, a possible hush hush talk to get the whales invest into a company? Hmm? Possible definitely possible.

i learned that cocierge get special emails inviting us to spend even more money in extra special ways.

only had one such email so far about citcon tickets that suddenly became available just for us. lol but i look forward to future such emails.

tho ihavne’t gotten one about these whaling parties. lol

You aren’t considered a whale.

i’m concierge. so i’m definitely a whale :D

Well, clearly CiG didn’t think so.

i didn’t get this mail but i have gotten mails to spend more money from them since my last round of spending.

maybe they aren’t having any of these meetings in canada is why i haven’t gotten this one.

but i did get an email to buy suddenly extra and secret tickets to citcon in germany this year because of it. XD

I’d say this party was for the top spenders, 10k plus or something.

It’s really irrelevant where this party would take place if you can spend that kind of money on a game you can afford to buy a ticket to go anywhere in the world.

the article just reports that invites went to concierge level backers. not really anything more than that.

Well, all I am trying to say is that it’s fairly obvious that it went to the people who have spent the most.

The egos of the people who spent 10 15k on SC would be bruised if they didn’t get an invite but the people who have spent the minimum required amount to be considered concierge did. Plus the people who have spent that kind of dough are more likely in a position to spend more and hence are juicer targets.

So really it’s kinda funny because one could argue that there is concierge and then there is CONCIERGE.

Off-topic/Personal Note: You should see Water’s recent live rendition of that tune you linked too. Just saying. o.O

(I would post it here…but I am pretty sure the Breehammer will lop off my pigtails. So /Google-foo it if you must. :( )

Speaking of which…where are my pigtails? :(

Edit/Update: Oh…they’re back! <3

(Something weird going on between MOP, WP and FB that was showing my avatar in the wee hours. :( )

Edit/Erratum: …that *wasn’t showing my avatar…proper.

(And yeah, pigtail spam to make up for it. :( )

When I read “space whales”… ;P

“…I hope you’ve got your special black Star Citizen VIP card because CIG has invited concierge-level backers — sorry, space whale…”

I am glad they’re starting to lose the pretense… o.O
