The Daily Grind: Would you play Overwatch if it had a PvE or co-op mode?

Overwatch had a strange 2018. While Blizzard expanded the game’s developer team last year, it also put out less content (and more repeat content) than the year before, to much grumbling from its playerbase, and that, we assume, helped knock it out of the revenue rankings the last couple of months.

That said, the expanded dev team must be working on something big, right? I’m fond of the theories that Blizzard will be taking a page out of the Dota 2, League of Legends, and SMITE playbooks to add some sort of co-op PvE mode or even a single-player expansion to the game this year. Of course, what I’d really like is for it to spring MMO wings, but I rather doubt Blizzard’s sights are set so high. A co-op PvE map that actually makes use of the game’s elaborate backstory? Yeah, that’d be neat.

Would you play Overwatch if it had a PvE or co-op mode? What do you think Blizzard is up to over there?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Yes, a PVE campaign would be a great place for me to hone my currently crappy FPS/TPS skills so that I could eventually play AND enjoy the PVP.

Absolutely. Wouldn’t be on my daily play (but essentially no game is anymore, aside from maybe some minor mobile game daily logins), but perhaps every week or two.

No, because i really don’t care about Onlywatch, but the game having a PvE mode would be incredible. Like oldschool shooters like HL2 or Shogo

I’d play PVE. No interest in competitive pvp, team-based or otherwise.

I’d much rather they make a singleplayer RPG out of it and actually make all the lore they keep generating useful.

Not going to help the situation, any more than declaring soldier 76 as gay despite creating media buzz, people that play overwatch dont care. Blizz would be better off making new maps and some new heros. Blizz is bleeding players because they have lost thier focus and have lost touch with their customer base.

I got Overwatch included as part of the Humble monthly, so there’s literally no cost barriers to entry for me, and STILL I don’t play it because it’s basically just the original (worst) parts of TF2 with a shinier polish and different (apparently better?) balancing.

I thought I might be interested if I get some sort of notification that there’s a PVE event going on, but it’s a pretty big install for my poor hard drive for something that’s time-limited, and that’s just a bridge too far for me.

I love the art, the music, the themes, the backstories and lore, the animated shorts, the whole ‘deal’ behind it… apart from it being a PVP hero-shooter. Y’know. The actual ‘game’ part.

If they’re working on a true, permanent PVE mode, then yeah… I might actually bother to install it and if it’s any good, maybe even keep it installed.

Preface this with the fact that I already play Overwatch, so the question that assumes I don’t doesn’t really apply.

That being said, Overwatch HAS some good PvE missions in place but they come and go. And they are really popular when they are available. But I think it’s more of the McRib syndrome. It’s only popular BECAUSE it’s limited.

I like playing them, but I think it’s probably less likely to be played if it was an everyday thing. Heck, even the PvP modes are rotated out on a daily/weekly basis for this reason. Having lots of modes that rotate in and out is one of its strong points. It would just be nice if they had more PvE modes that rotated in more frequently.

This again is why I love Garden Warfare 2 so much; it has 2 permanent PvE coop modes (Garden and Graveyard ops), some single player quests, and the ability to just invite s few friends to backyard and fight the AIs that spawn, in addition to its competitive modes. It also has boss hunts in the mystery portal from time to time which are special coop ops against special bosses, they are fun but really rough on higher difficulty, and remind me a bit of MMO raids.

I enjoyed the OW PvE stuff, but the limited nature was annoying and I stopped playing awhile ago.

Gadzooks! I had no idea that Garden Warfare had those things! It’s been sitting free in my Origin Account for ages now, and I never bothered to install it because I thought it was just a PVP thing. What a waste!

It’s focus is indeed multiplayer PvP but the second game even let’s you play private bot matches. The first one only has garden ops for PvE content but 2 has a lot more.

Overwatch Mann vs Machine mode would sound interesting.

PvE mode? Sign me up.

It’s pretty much the only reason I haven’t bought Overwatch to date.
