One of the biggest developments for Final Fantasy XIV in 2024 that isn’t named “Dawntrail” has to be the MMO’s debut on Microsoft’s game console. Apparently someone over in Bill Gates country was a little too excited about this, however, and pulled the trigger on a post announcing the launch of the FFXIV open beta on Xbox Series X|S.
In a now-deleted post, Microsoft wrote, “It’s been a long old journey, but we’re thrilled to finally be able to say critically acclaimed online RPG Final Fantasy XIV is officially available on Xbox Series X|S!” The post also stated that any progress in the open beta would “carry over to the full release.”
The company quickly yanked the announcement, saying, “We incorrectly posted news this morning regarding the Final Fantasy XIV Online open beta. We’ll follow-up with the correct date when available. We apologize for any confusion.”
Even with the retraction, the real beta announcement is expected soon, as the Xbox launch has been scheduled for this spring.
In the meanwhile, Season 10 of the Crystalline Conflict began in the game, with Season 9’s rewards now available for claiming.
And during an interview at the Tokyo fan festival, Game Director Naoki Yoshida indicated that he’s got ideas through the game’s 9.0 update “without running dry.” He joked that if he got laid off from the project — an unlikely proposition — Yoshida would continue to be involved in the game’s life as a contract worker or opinionated player.
