The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite MMO studio that doesn’t even make a game you like?

I’m going to dip slightly outside of true MMOs to answer this one and pick Bungie as my choice. Destiny 2 is not a pure MMORPG, but it’s MMO-ish on a good day, and while my husband plays it, it’s never gonna be for me; I’m never going to be a looter-shooter person, and to be honest, while the game is pretty in pictures, the overly crisp frames in-game kinda make my eyeballs bleed.

However, Bungie has been on the right track for the last few years, in spite of its acquisition by Sony. In 2021, the studio was rocked by a major abuse scandal, but unlike bosses at a certain rival I could name, Bungie leadership actually appears to have focused on reparations and committed to multiple proworker causes (instead of continuing to abuse workers and flout labor law). No gaming company is perfect, but I’d rather support the ones that are actively trying to do and be better.

What’s your favorite MMO studio that doesn’t even make a game you like? What gaming companies do you respect, even if they don’t actually make anything you enjoy playing?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
