World of Warcraft removes references to former employees and removes the AoE cap in patch 9.1.5

These references, however, remain.

The most immediate fallout of the ongoing Activision-Blizzard lawsuit has been the removal of numerous references to now-former employees directly named or implicated in the suit, and the latest hotfix has removed a number of such references in World of Warcraft. Jonathan LeCraft, Jesse McCree, and Luis Barriga have had the vast majority of their references removed, with NPC names changed and items renamed. Worth noting is that there is still one reference to McCree in the game with the Draenei city of Mac’Aree and a few NPCs whose names have not yet been changed, so there’s still some work to be done in this department, but the overall reference volume is going down.

Meanwhile, patch 9.1.5 continues its path of pleading with the playerbase to please love the game again because we can change, baby. See, the AoE cap is gone now, so now AoE abilities work against any size of group but just deal reduced damage past five enemies. Also, you can scrap your old Legendary items for a full refund of Soul Ash and Soul Cinders so you don’t have to grind that progress again! Come on, come back to us. We love you, really. Do you want some new Void Elf customization options? Is that what you need?

Activision-Blizzard is considered a controversial company in the MMO and gaming space owing to a long string of scandals over the last few years, including the Blitzchung boycott, mass layoffs, labor disputes, and executive pay fiasco. Most recently, the company was sued by the state of California for fostering a work environment riddled with sexual harassment and discrimination, the disastrous corporate response to which has further compounded Blizzard’s ongoing pipeline issues and the widespread perception that its online games are in decline.
