Trion Worlds teased a new game this week, providing an image of a game fans believe they have identified as Devilian Online, a Korean-born OARPG that’s got more in common with Diablo than with the MOBAs MMO studios have become so fond of cloning, though it’s led MMO players to wonder what else Trion might be up to.

Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions.

Koolthulu Siphaed It didn’t start as an in-house game; they only brought it in-house at the very end in a clear attempt to salvage it. Petroglyph had been building it up to then.

StergosZambellakis Money to make one more than likely.
They probably make enough off all of their cash shop ventures to keep their current games and publishing going, but nowhere near enough to produce a new MMO.
Given their recent history regarding craftsmanship of games they’ve made over the last few years or had a hand in helping to develop (Defiance, End of Nations, Warface, etc) it’s more than likely they are also lacking in the skill and creative aspect to field a new MMO as well.
Porting someone else’s games makes the most amount of sense for Trion since few trust anything they actually make these days will be quality, and they can always fall back on “Well to be fair, we didn’t actually make that game you hate. Those guys overseas did so blame them” on their forums.

This game plays exactly like diablo 3 , just like Lost Ark will. Has the same skill impact on mobs and ragdolls that makes the mobs either explode in a bloody mess or fling them in the air exactly like in diablo 3.

So if you played D3 and liked it look forward to this game.

blackcat7k Sythalin If it was open world like Lineage, then that would be interesting, but if it is just hub/instance based like Diablo 3 and PoE, then I agree, why would anyone play it over those two?

Dystopiq Rheem Octuris  I can’t speak to Devilian Online, but considering how many devs/publishers jumped on the MOBA bandwagon, it doesn’t entirely surprise me Trion would want to add a OARPG to its stable…  If anything, my guess is that they are trying to be ahead of the market as the OARPG market isn’t quite as crowded as the MMO or MOBA market.

I have not been following the MOBA scene, but its my understanding there are A LOT of them.  On the OARPG front, there are really only 3 that I can think of: Diablo 3, Path of Exile, and Marvel Heroes – each of them seemingly doing very well for themselves.  I am sure there are more, but those are probably the only ones with any sort of significant mindshare.

Dont know if Devillion has any competitive aspects… If not – then I dont think it can compete against D3, PoE, Lost Ark and Lineage Eternal. Games need something people can aim-towards. Goals to achieve; things to compete at. Without Ladders an oARPG wont survive anymore imho. Atleast such a random Asian oARPG that looks so “strange” to Western Audience.

It is very odd that no game has spun off from Shattered Galaxy. It was fantastic fun.
