One Shots: Chocobo chocobo revolution

Stop it, Final Fantasy XIV. Just… stop it already. Stop being so ridiculously pretty!

I don’t need readers constantly shoving this game’s drool-worthy art style in my face, even if it has to do with oversized and overdecorated chickens. See? It even brought Toy Clown out to look amazing and make the rest of us curse the day we were born.

“Maybe this isn’t the type of beastie meant,” Toy Clown said, “but I absolutely adore my character’s chocobo in FFXIV, especially since I found out you can dye them. I have lots of other fancy mounts, from sea and air, dragons to machines, but nothing beats Romples as a companion and mount! He’s my favorite beastie (and bestie!)”

“Whales are my favorite creatures,” sent in The Lurker. “Not so fantastical but majestic and a bit rare since not that many MMO:s have a lot of marine life. Here is a Wurm Online whale following along for a while when I sailed around the world in the boat I made. Slightly later I met a sea serpent and the expedition got an abrupt and unfortunate ending.”

Here’s something new that I learned this week: Champions Online has player housing. Huh! Who knew?

Hirku know: “Why settle for a dank old cave when you can have a luxury penthouse for a hideout? I’ve been enjoying Champions Online so much that I decided a bit of splurging was in order. I love this housing not just for the gameplay benefits and the little touches like functional plumbing, but because it’s the first housing system I’ve tried that doesn’t make me feel like I’m locked away in a solo instance (even though I am). Not only do I have windows, I have super ginormous windows, and outside is the full 3-D city complete with ambient sounds and a full day/night cycle. Yeah, it’s good to be the super king.”

Last week I asked readers to show off their favorite MMO critters and beasts. Reader Hikari had a different — and perhaps more interesting — take on this challenge.

“For me, it has to be the The Filth in Secret World Legends,” Hikari said. “More than your stereotypical creeping evil, it is the thing that crawls in your skin and destroys your mind. It, They and Them thinks and are alive, but are merely the dreams and nightmares of a greater unknown. It seeps into every thing, every wavelength, every thought. They eat stars for breakfast… and we are all made of stars.”

Then there’s this World of Warcraft pic from BalsBigBrother:

*clears throat & sings*

High on a hill was a wayward goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Loud was the voice of the wayward goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

*Off screen* “Will you be quiet I am trying to take screen shots here”

Wayward goatherd: Um … oh sorry I didn’t see you there *blushes*

Seen any good explosions lately, chemical or magical? It’s always really tough to get one of those in the thick of the action, but if you have a neat screenshot showing some epic ka-blewie, let’s see it for this week’s challenge!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Alas, I have no explosion pics to share this week. When things start exploding in my games, I’m usually too busy trying not to die to take a screenshot.

The best I can offer is this close-up pic of my United Nations of Earth battleship firing its spinal-mount gun while leading the charge in a game of Stellaris.

Cheers,

Realistically, there aren’t many games that do explosions better than League of Maidens, so here we go. Lightning, missiles, cannons and fireballs. Who could ask for more?

This is a closed alpha shot that I got permission to post here from the developers.

Not mid explosion, but you can see the imminent destruction Drusera from Wildstar is about to lay down on this giant robot.

TERA is UI. Some of you may know ManUp as the guild that dominated BDO for quite awhile. But TERA is where they started and I was laying some smack down on them long before they were big in BDO (TBF, they were a strong GvG guild in TERA as well). PvP in TERA was tons of fun.

Perhaps you meant a more friendly form of “Ka-blewie”. Here is my Mithra (they will always be FFXI names for me) watching some nice fireworks from Moonfire Faire last year.

Thank you for showing my FFXIV pic and the comments made me laugh. I showed the link to this article to my new FFXIV friends!

For the screenshot theme this week, I shuffled through my BDO folder and pulled up my Maehwa in the ramping-up stage of explosiveness!

Some people just want to make music while the world burns.

No visible explosions in this shot but those who played War Within in Warframe without spoilers will understand. Next up, work my to the Sacrifice.

It is raining here in Austin and I couldn’t be happier. We went about a month we no rain and… down here in the Texas heat that means something. But that is not the real reason I’m joyfully inside listening to the march of raindrops purple everything in sight. Nope. I’m happy because I have no choice but to play an MMO today. Oh well, I will just have to grin and bear it.

Explosions, that is the screenshot homework? Heh. Well, my B&S Blade Master, Bayliee, is a walking detonation of sorts. Just get in her way and you will see what I mean.

In MHW, the killshot of the final big monster for a quest objective is auto-captured and shown to you as your stats scroll at the end.

I have one of a double-splosion where I fired a cannon at a big bad and he smacked the boat I was on before the cannonballs reached him. So there I am flying thru the air sideways on a killshot and for a second I thought I had been one-shotted.
