Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire has launched; get caught up on the expansion here!

Update: It’s live now! Have fun!

Guild Wars 2 officially launches its second B2P expansion, Path of Fire, today. In just two hours in fact. And if our polls are any judge, quite a lot of our audience is hyped for the release!

We’ll be streaming the fun later today (with special guests if we can pull it off), but in the meantime, ArenaNet has a pre-show on Twitch beginning at 10 a.m. EDT this morning, leading up to the noon launch when we all go charging into the desert.

Personally, I’m aiming to finish chapter one and then head straight for drinks on the Lily of the Elon. Who’s with me?

We’ve also rounded up all of our Path of Fire coverage to date, including our columnist’s impressions of the preview weekend, our look at mounts, our deep-dive into the new elite specs, and our team’s thoughts on the expansion as a whole. Happy expansion day!

I’ve only just (as of a couple of weeks ago) picked up Heart of Thorns and started playing through that. I really hope somebody can tell me that it gets easier, because I’m regularly getting utterly flattened in the story content. (Last hard boss fight ended with me having half my gear fully broken, the rest damaged, and I was cursing like a sailor. It felt like I spend as much time running back after respawning after dying than fighting.)

Right now I’m kind of regretting buying the last expansion – I hope this one is genuinely better instead of just being harder, as right now it really feels it’s more punishment than entertainment.

hmm… well I didn’t think HoT was all that tough, a few modrem snipers can make it interesting but everything else gets hammered. most of the storyline content has been a matter of “figure out mechanics” “OH!” then “do it”.

For me it’s a case of my physical dexterity at the keyboard just not being up to it. When things change quickly, just I have trouble moving and performing actions (and don’t get me started on simultaneously fighting the camera). I do a lot better with classic tab-targeting gameplay.

fair enough. :)

I am also new; I thought the LS was tough or at least annoying. I thought TD was at least as bad. HoT was a disappointment after GW2. But overall I found GW2 kind of interesting.

OTOH, currently I hate PoF far, far, far more. The launch mechanism was not great and I was disconnected about 10 times today; not great but not a big deal/surprise for MMO launch day.

But, I am stuck on getting my next mastery point from the chef. My XP is maxed, so if I just continue doing story, I will be wasting XP which feels very bad. I went into the next zone and the first mastery point required jumping. So I went back and tried some more. It is the usual pick up ingredients quest, but the truly annoying thing is that you have hit him with a targeting reticle and there is a long cast time and he moves. So you are rushing around, having done the silliness successfully for five ingredients, press two and he walks out of your circle. I get crashes but I can’t see why a dev team would go live with this design.

So I am back playing WoW; I think my friends were right and I should have continued to avoid GW2. Currently, I certainly regret the time and money I spent on GW2. But I will give it a couple of weeks and see if anything changes.

P.s.: Sigh, stubbornness. I eventually got this. But it left me not with a sense of in-game accomplishment – this skill will hopefully never be used again – but rather a sadness at having wasted some of my all-too-finite life on this and wondering whether I wouldn’t be better off playing a proper MMO.

There are two kinds of players, the ones who like activities because they are totally different and the ones who dislike them for the exact same reason. Or as I refer to them, the people who are wrong vs the people who are right. :-)

Happy launch everyone! I’ll catch up to ya in a couple months. Too busy with ESO and Divinity 2 atm. Hopefully by then they’ll have squashed the majority of any gremlins in the works. =D

Here’s hoping that farming the Hero Points in PoF is a lot less of a PITA than it was in HoT. The fact that the zones seem a lot more friendly to exploration, and the focus is more on story (rather than group/zerg events) is a positive thing that leaves me hopeful at least.

Very small sample size, but my ancedotal evidence is positive. I got three just by riding by, the last with only one other person. So, perhaps HPs no longer need trains.

Are they forcing you to grind for the new specs like they did with HoT? If so, can you just use hero points that you have saved-up?

You can, yes!

Not amazing news so far, though not entirely unsurprising: Many people, including me and my hubby, are stuck at 76%. Must… resist… jumping… in… before… download…

Got stuck with the download too but I can play, currently in the middle of the prologue.

I might be bold and jump in… I’m getting very impatient. I would far rather let the download clear but it’s just not moving.

You can also just unlock your new elite specs provided you have enough hero points saved up and assign skills while waiting for the rest to download before starting the story quest.

Why are there log in queues?

My download’s already at 12%, how long can this be?

Many downloads (mine included) are sticking at 76% :/

Nah if I was return I would want to play Heart of Thorns first to catch up on the story at 42 pounds I would rather spend the money on other games .

Now had they offered Heart of Thorns at say 5-10 pounds I might have brought that played through the content and if I got back into the game I would have brought Path of Fire at full price in a few weeks time .

Enjoy, ladies and gents. Hopefully it turns out well, and if it does I’ll likely pick it up at some point.

We can still unlock the new LS chapters even if we don’t own PoF, right? We just need to log in and shit, and then can play them after we purchase PoF?

Reader
TomTurtle

Correct. They unlock and you can play them once you own PoF.

Sweet! At the very least I’ll make sure to get those stored up for when I pick up PoF.

Now to hope I can do some serious work on my backlog of games/list of MMO activities in the MMO’s I’m playing (including finishing episode 5/6 of the last living story!) before I finally cave and pick up the expansion. Firebrand keeps calling me, and I don’t know how long I’ll be able to resist its siren song.

Assuming there will be a download? Just logged in to GW2 and a download did not start.

For my part I did a few hours of PoF during the first preview weekend and enjoyed it so much that I decided not to continue lest I spoil the launch experience. The difficulty level for me felt just right, there were some challenges at times but no where near as consistently difficult as HoT. Also, I always enjoyed desert environs like Tatooine in SWTOR and Egypt in Secret World, so the Crystal Desert is right up my alley. And yeah, GW2 has been my go-to mmo for several years now; a big reason being with no sub I can take breaks from it totally guilt free.

I really hope they have a smooth launch today. I really hope they make good on course correcting all the little things that made HoT something it probably shouldn’t have been at launch.

I am SO stoked for this game!

Not going anywhere near this until I see some thoughts from folks who did jump in. Lesson learned from Heart of Thorns and I don’t wish to repeat that experience again. Not to worry though I lose nothing by waiting and I have plenty of stuff to keep me occupied in the meantime.

Hope you folks who do jump in have a good time though :-)

Path of Fire hype! I hope all my fellow GW2 players have a great time. And let’s hope the launch goes smoothly. <3
