The Daily Grind: If you quit WoW in 2021, where did you go?

A while back on Reddit, I saw a question asking former World of Warcraft players where they’ve gone. It’s not a novel question; we’ve asked it ourselves, including after the Blitzchung fiasco, when many gamers left the Blizzard ecosystem and never went back. But it’s still an interesting one, and one that’s newly relevant thanks to yet another Blizzard scandal, this one now going on half a year long.

Obviously, some folks went to Final Fantasy XIV; we saw a huge spike of activity for that game last summer. But we also saw games like Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online and even Albion Online pick up piles of new players. I’d be willing to bet every mid-to-large-size MMO snagged fleeing WoW refugees thanks to both the corporate scandal and the ongoing mismanagement of the game itself.

If you quit WoW in 2021, where did you go? Did you stay in the genre, and if so, which MMO is getting your money and time?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
