MMO Week in Review: Blizzard doesn’t want your money (May 24, 2015)

Too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review!

Were you one of the three million people who ditched World of Warcraft earlier this year? Did you leave in part because you could fly virtually everywhere in the game but not the new expansion and found it irritating, illogical, and design-poor? Were you expecting to resub at some future point once Blizzard addressed the feature? Good news: Blizzard has nixed flying in Draenor forever; it doesn’t want your money, so you can now spend it on the hundreds of other MMORPGs on the market. You’re welcome!

Read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions.

Update: Eliot just added this perspective over at BW:

How could “no flying” be less annoying?

Actually he might be right soon.  After everyone quits only the people who think it’s no big deal will be left.

Thanks for the reply Bree.
I am one of those people who cannot stand the rising trend of clickbait-style headlines in all aspects of media.   It’s now even crept into broadcast television news.   While your post was amusing and certainly did NOT contain any phrases  like “You won’t believe what happens when Blizzard…..”, it evoked annoyance to that aspect of my personality.   It is a fair statement to say it is a pet peeve of mine; like nails on a chalkboard.
It was my (mis)understanding that the Week In Review was effectively a news column.  As such it bothered me seeing a mild opinion mini rant against a design decision (for which I could care less about, for the record.  I haven’t played WoW actively since Burning Crusade) by Blizzard.   In any case, thank you for clearing up what the weekly update is envisioned to be.

I still stand by my distaste for hyperbole and sensationalized headlines, and that news and opinion should be separate.  However I will freely admit the wording of my initial comment was a minor over reaction compared to the actual content I was replying to.

I certainly did not intend to raise the ire of the MOP junior defense police squad and cause such a commotion.   It seems there is little room in many people’s minds for opinions which dissent from the popular crowd and they will go to extreme lengths to ostracize any who share them.   I do thank both yourself and the moderators for not silencing the discussion as a matter of fact.

Evade2015 “Flying in an MMO makes no sense” – tell that to my first character in City of Heroes, the first game that let me do that.  She was disconnected from the server at midnight, in the air over Atlas Park, one last time.

Siphaed SuppliesATK Indeed, I tried out various MMOs trying to find a more communicating / social community. I didn’t find any.
I remember in 2010 on my Aion server, you could barely see the group recruitings in LFG chat, because all the talk was pushing them away! It was entertainment in itself to just log on and watch the chat. Nowadays, it’s always dead, and group recruitings is all there is. Most games seem to be this way atm, as if the MMO community as a whole has changed and now cares more about grinding their next piece of gear than about socializing and creating a nice environment to play in.

Wow, the front page version of this article is nothing but a jaded rant. I’ve had no issue with the lack of flying since they are now providing gameplay that rewards exploration.

While I lament the unavailability of my Druid flight form in Draenor, I still managed to fly quite a bit.  While your flying mounts don’t work, there are a variety of devices that provided limited self-directed flight.  Virtually all have cooldowns and limitations, but if you spend some gold or time with crafting or professions, you can spend some time in the air.  Goblin gliders, xD rocket kit, anti-gravity generator, Aviana’s feather and SkyTerror will allow you limited flight and can be used sequentially e.g. after 60 seconds your rocket explodes, so  good time to gain altitude and break out a goblin glider or the feather.  There’s also the gliders and rockets available for the Nagrand quests.  I also have a dropped item that turns me into a flaming meteor and launches me into the heavens and hopefully a landing in water ;-)
These devices will allow you to skip NPCs, circumvent quest mechanics, escape difficult situations and the all other reasons Blizzard has put forward for not implementing full flight, but they have cooldowns and limitations so you can’t do it all the time.
Given that limited flight is already available, I think Blizzard could have removed some of the angst from no-flying by implementing limited flights for your mounts, either with an exhaustion mechanic or cooldown.  Like the existing devices, they’d only be used occasionally, and they’d provide some opportunites to show off your mounts in flight.
While it seems full flight has disappeared for Draenor, I suspect it will return in some way in the next expansion as it provides a different way to view and enjoy the world.
