One Shots: Don’t look behind you!

Oh man, you did it. You clicked on this column and brought a curse onto your head. Right now, something terrifying has materialized out of the shadows right behind you and is creeping up to make a soup dish of your skull. Don’t look! You’ll just frighten it and then everyone will come out of this looking silly. So act all nonchalant until you feel the claws dig into your scalp, OK?

Or you could be like Vincent, who took his greatest fear to task in Final Fantasy XIV: “You’re just going to have to take my word for it that I vanquished the scary fella behind me, regardless of how petrified I look in this screenshot.”

Ignore the pee on the floor! That’s victory pee right there!

Everyone is looking suitably heroic and impressive this week, including Utakata with this stunning Blade and Soul vista. The colors… the colors!

“I came not to bring peace, but a sword,” she said before cutting the heads off of all the things.

I don’t know what’s staring down Natalyia’s blaster here in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but boy do I feel sorry for it. Probably some scruffy-looking nerf herder who tried to use intergalactic robocalls to sell acne cream.

“While I have more shots of enemies just before I hand them their heads, there are a few notable post-head-handing defeats,” Natalyia said. “We don’t see Arcann in this shot, but the expression is entirely apt for my opinion of that character.”

“I really didn’t expect an anime moment in Elder Scrolls Online, but here we are, with a partially bisected Molag Bal and a magical sword of light wielded by an Argonian Vampire,” posted Dak Thulhu. “I’m trying to remember who the villain of this story is again.”

It’s Elves. It’s always Elves.

“And speaking of the 300 who could forget Star Trek Online, Pit of Death Edition?” said Hikari.

I like how we have a Starfleet officer here calmly watching the brutal murder of an alien. That’s the Kirk way!

Chances are that even if you’re not playing an MMO you used to, you still have a screenshot folder or two full of pictures and sweet, sweet memories lying around! This week’s screenshot challenge is to find an old pic from a game you used to play and tell us a story about it.

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

I enjoy my time in Anthem and besides exquisite combat it also has a breathtakingly beautiful world you can explore in all it’s verticality. It’s a joy in many respects, not sure why the press is releasing so many punishing reviews, Anthem deserves much better.

My TERA days are long behind me, but this screenshot from 2013 will always be one of my favorites I’ve taken in an MMO. It was one of the very few times I’ve gone out of bounds in one, and it was entirely through painstakingly testing jumps on a mountainside because I just really, really wanted to explore the area I was in from a different angle. TERA’s ability to have the combat it does but also retain the size and scope of its world is something that will always continue to impress me, and I adored being able to see this view of “in between” areas that the player was never meant to see because it not only let me appreciate a unique area, but also let me enjoy the sheer scope of the world.

Argh, maybe I should install it again…

Since I lost most of my old screens years ago in a hard drive crash I thought it fitting to provide of an image of my CMDR looking at a black hole.
He is, no doubt, pondering the reliability of spinning rust data carriers and the ease with with one might lose a backup CD.

Well, my latest MMOish game is taking up all my time. So rather than look in my archive of old MMO pics, how about this windy shot overlooking a rather uncertain landscape. It sort of fits Anthem, right?

Sadly, that’s true. I hope it gets turned around. I’m playing it and having fun constantly asking myself “what exactly is supposed to be wrong with it?”.

Yes. The gamer rage is real and unwarranted. The game has problems, no question about it. But even the issues do not matter anymore. I just watched a vid review from a reputable source that gave the game a 4 out of 10. 4!!! LOL!

It is a hysteria that feeds on itself where people not playing parrot what they hear and reviewers try to outdo each other in trashing the game.

I mean, I’m also seeing the Mass Effect companions we could have had, the possibilities for storytelling which just aren’t there in Anthem’s format but yeah, Apples and Oranges, you can’t compare it that way. The game keeps so many doors open for a possible expansion it would be a real waste if Bioware had to abandon it because of the lukewarm recepti0n. Let’s see what the coming months will bring.

My store of old screenshots is fairly small since I’ve never been one to take a lot of screenshots unfortunately. Still, I do have a fair number of old screenshots from my days in Everquest back in the early 00s that have survived several moves and transfers between computers and backup discs, etc. Below I’ve selected a few from the in game wedding our guild leader Caldara and her in game beau Maulk had. Sadly I don’t really recall much about the event other than it was held on an Aviak platform along the shore (or out in the middle of?) Lake Rathe(?) (fuzzy on the zone name after all these years). The final picture shows them at some later point after they’d gotten their surnames changed to match.

Sorry about all the name tags in the pictures, but as I said, I didn’t do screenshots a lot so didn’t know tricks for getting good ones. Oh, and if any old guildies happen to see this…*waves* Hiya :)

Edited to add: Well, apparently the pictures got posted in reverse order, so the first one is the after pic and the other two are from during the ceremony.

Found my old Photobucket account, which had a load of my old imageshack pics on it. So we have a few WoW ones, first views of Outland after Burning Crusade dropped. The Fel Reaver one is a bit newer as initially they had no animations when BC dropped, so the stealthy buggers skated around.

Couple here, mucking about with the layout in Guild Wars, as well as showing off my new pet. The other is just feeling fabulous in Asheron’s Call 2.

Thanks for the plug again, Mr. Justin! <3

…but so everyone knows, I think I used that pic in question before demonstrating what happen to TERA's (and not Blade & Soul as indicated) original start zone…which they turned into a max level apocalyptic zone. My character was at an age that the only head that will be rolling would be hers, after her body is consume in an intense by fire or by teeth. :(

Can I, instead, link a trailer I made for a game I used to love and play? (also, thanks for the shout out on the screenshot)

Hmm, that’s better than the Mordor trailer SSG did. Good job.
