The Daily Grind: Which MMORPG’s graphics hold up long past their due?

When Dark Age of Camelot first hit beta a million years ago, I remember being super impressed with its graphics. Up until that point, the major MMORPGs were Ultima Online, EverQuest, Asheron’s Call, and (if I’m generous) Anarchy Online, none of which was what I’d call graphically remarkable. DAOC’s graphical quality was a whole generation beyond those other MMOs.

And yet, even it was quickly surpassed by the likes of Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes, EverQuest II, World of Warcraft, and Guild Wars – the last of which still holds up remarkably well for a game from 2005 (and is probably my pick for this Daily Grind). Keeping up with the graphical arms race in that period was almost impossible; contrast that with 2024, when many of our top MMORPGs are over a decade old and can stand toe to toe with MMOs from the last few years.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
