The MOP Up: Hytale takes a deeper approach to the Minecraft genre

Have you heard of Hytale? If you’re a fan of the Trove or Minecraft school of sandbox design, then it definitely bears further investigation. This game, which is currently in testing, is a multiplayer createbox with adventuring, minigames, biomes, construction, and plenty of crafting. MOP reader Minimalistway thinks you should check it out, and we do too.

Hytale supports many different playstyles,” the developers said. “Whether you think of yourself as a settler, adventurer, or craftsperson, you’ll have plenty to do as you advance through the story. Best of all, the adventure mode is fully playable in co-op: gather a party of friends and combine your skills to leave a mark on the world together.”

This is just the beginning of the rest of the news! Read on for a roundup of other smaller MMO news stories and videos from this past week in this edition of The MOP Up (and if you don’t see a news story that we should have, drop us a tip)!

I really liked the look of Hytale but am wondering about the gameplay. There is so little information for something where they basically make their Minecraft 2.0?
It mentions PvP somewhere briefly. So FFA PvP? Is it the same “monsters at night overrun you”? The “adventure mode” can be played with friends but does that mean it has an open world where people who do not have a group of pre-made friends can settle and explore or is it an instanced like thing like a group dungeon?
Personally I really like the Maestro minecraft model where you have a randomly generated world (actually unique own biomes) with pretty regular mobs for fighting, claiming and settling -but not gathering – and then an explorer world where you are allowed to gather resources, explore mines etc – which has no mobs at all. It allows to spend your time as peaceful or adrenalin hyped as you like. But the problem is that the resource world is rather soon explored completely and pretty much any mine you find is full of torches already. Does not feel very exploratory.
On the other hand there is Creativerse with the peaceful setting where mobs spawn regularly and are regularly strong and fighting back if attacked – but they don’t attack by them self. Perfect model in my opinion. Plus the world outside of claims regenerates quickly and it is a true MMO: you meet new people, find their builds, not necessary to have a preset “group of friends”. I mean who of us adults with job and family manages to have a regular schedule and getting a group of friends regularly together at the same time … We see friends regularly but never the same ones and most don’t play games of course. Usually it takes weeks if not month to tackle a date with a specific friend or couple.

Hytale trailer was so impressive and its website is beautiful, whoever designed that website have a good taste, it is a pleasure to read it and look at it.

The game focus more on RPG and adventure in general, which makes it more like Trove, anyway … i hope to see MoP streams for it one day :-)

Hytale is made by Hypixel, which is one of the (if not the) most popular third-party minecraft servers. I’m gonna have to keep my eye on this one.

Well based on the trailer Hytale does look graphically appealing – models and everything looks highly detailed, basically like a superior version of Minecraft. Looks like they’ve also got some heavy inspiration from games like WoW as well where I see a spot that pretty much looks like old Silithus, complete with a towering hive-like structure swarming with giant bugs.

Looking through the site and the list of features, it sounds very promising. Like an actually good blend of games like Terraria and Minecraft coupled with RPG/MMO type stuff. Something that really hasn’t been properly done yet, imo, because a lot of the voxel games have missed the mark or go too deep off in one direction (or in Cube World’s case it takes freaking forever because one dude is stubbornly doing all of it with his wife and keeps going radio silent for massive periods of time).

Guess they’ve also done a bunch of custom server type stuff for Minecraft including the ‘Survival Games’/Hunger Games mod that first started to really popularize what would become the Battle Royale genre. So that’s interesting. If they can make the game look as good as the trailer and have all that they’re claiming it will have then it could definitely be a great game.
