One Shots: Dark beauties

34

I think that there’s a lot of dark beauty to be found in MMORPGs, but hey, when I ask the One Shots community to share their vision of what that may be, I get a selection of Hot Topic employees at work. Maybe they’ll give us a discount on those Nightmare Before Christmas scarves?

Anyway, Natalyia is kicking us off this week with another ridiculously beautiful Black Desert picture. I am pretty sure that Black Desert isn’t even a game anymore but an Adobe Photoshop demo program to make the rest us feel ashamed to be playing our low-res titles.

“Here is got my black-clad Dark Knight admiring the Heidel sunset,” she wrote before handing us a flyer for 20% off all anime products.

MOP’s own Tyler takes us to World of Warcraft for this follow-up to a previous week’s challenge.

“You asked for shots of our favourite MMO race, so of course I’m going to send you a Blood Elf pic. The only question was, which Blood Elf? I have so very many, you see. So I went with my Mage. He was my first main in WoW, and while I largely abandoned him in favour of my Warlock a long time ago, he still feels like the best character to show off my Sin’dorei pride. This shot was taken just after the player model updates, as I gawked at his spiffy new high rez face.”

“Are there stages of grief, when you die yourself?” Miol asked. “Is this one denial, anger, or bargaining?”

Miol, my friend, you are getting way, way too deep for what is no doubt a simple resurrection prompt in Guild Wars 2. The only thing that guy judges is where he gets his renn-faire outfits.

Hikari has more Black Desert visuals to shame the rest of us. SHAME, SHAME!

“I just loved how the lighting on this turned out. Not, beauty in the dark, but more a shining beacon of good in a dark, decayed alley of evil,” Hikari said.

Dang, we’re all poets today, aren’t we?

Hirku’s “dark queen” is holding court in this Star Wars: The Old Republic screenshot. Every time I see a Sorcerer flash lightning everywhere, I have so many safety questions to ask. Like, how does she not get shocked herself? Does she wear rubber soles? Is she accidentally frying all of her electronics all the time? Can she recharge her smartphone with that? Why is “lightning” the Dark Side’s thematic power? Could the Light Side get thunder and then they get together to put on a cool sound-and-light show?

For my own contribution this week, I’m going to share one of the last pictures I ever took in WildStar. This is my Aurin, Jem Hologram, and her faithful companion, an anniversary roswdower.

Our screenshot challenge is a bit personal and open to interpretation: Share a picture and a story of a sight that makes you nostalgic and wistful for the past — for whatever reason!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

I’ve been trying to send something other than Star Trek Online pics to One Shots — because I’ve been doing too much of that lately, I think — but this week will be an exception, for a couple of reasons.

Part, the First

I promised our Massively pal, deekay, that I’d give him a look at how my Pike-era starship and crew were coming along. So, here’s an early look at an away team. This isn’t the entire command crew of the USS Endurant (NCC 1715), deekay, merely the folks I beamed down to a mission recently;

L-R:

Chief Engineer Kuvet You know that purple alien who recurred during Discovery‘s second season? I’m told he’s a Saurian (of “Saurian Brandy” fame), so it felt right to include one of STO’s Saurians on the command staff here. Purple, of course.]

Chief Medical Officer Elisabeth Anne Dehner. Will she eventually develop massive psi powers and silver eyes? :-) I dunno, but given that the USS Discovery is effectively a TARDIS with warp nacelles, I’m not entirely convinced that the Star Trek timeline won’t shift a bit before the series is done, so maybe not.

My commanding officer, Admiral’s insignia and all. :-)

First Officer Manam Hamoud A certain president’s ignorant hate-rhetoric was annoying me more than usual one day, so this character is from C23rd Cairo, and she’s everything the dumbass believes can’t exist. She’s awesome, rational, ethical, and very, very good at her job.

Science Officer Marta Okataya. This character was part of a Discovery pack offered by Cryptic. You can barely see it here, but she has cybernetic implants similar to those of Keyla Detmer from Discovery. on the left side of her face.

Cheers, pal!

Part, The Second (a.k.a Justin’s Request)

Justin asked for screenshots which make us feel good about a time in our gaming past.

Well, my vintage City of Heroes screenshots are still safely stored off-drive somewhere I can’t remember, so that’s out (but they are very, very safe!)

Also, I’m not much for nostalgia or the past; in general. I prefer the present and the future.

The closest I’m able to get to meeting your request, Justin, is to offer this pic of my main in STO (who is unabashedly a proxy for myself), and his Russian Blue cat (who is a proxy for my real-life cat, whose pic has previously appeared here on Massively).

I’ve mentioned before that I grew up on re-runs on the original Star Trek. The show absolutely blew my mind as a child, and all I wanted to do thereafter was to live in that universe.

Sometimes, I visit the interior of my main’s starship in STO and just walk around, enjoying the feeling of “being there”.

It’s as close as I’ll ever get to realizing my childhood dream to be a part of the Star Trek universe.

And it’s enough. :-)

Apologies for the insane post length!

Cheers all,

I too lost most of my old screenies from back in the early days. But there are a couple of newer shots which make me nostalgic. And this one of my Sentinel in SWTOR’s Section X fits the bill.

Section X launched as part of one of the first significant game updates. It was not part of a true xpac and only added a new dailies area for those who capped at 50. It was sorely needed too as 50’s were running out of things to do.

But what this cap evokes is all the fun I had during those early SWTOR days. Everything about the game, back then, appealed to MMORPG sensibilities. I was a member of a strong guild. Group content was a blast with guildies. Leveling was enjoyable solo and I was working my way through all of the individual class stories for both the Empire and the Republic. And the graphics and art style were just the right mix to ensure the game ran as smooth as silk on my system.

Despite the naysayers, the game was an incredible experience and had great potential.

I loved it and this cap reminds me of those times.

Lost most of my old screenshots over the years, but here’s an old potato screenshot (1440×900, much resolution) of …Sartherion(?) Mostly just for the chat with my guildies, which still makes me chuckle. Man I miss those days of raiding and just logging in to chat and hang out, they were good peeps.

Is that the one where those indigo dragon mounts drop? (That would put that image back around Wrath if it is.) o.O

That apparently. I remember we farmed the 10 man version hard for a while with 3 drakes up to try to get that mount. Never remembered if we actually got one to drop : /

Blast from the past…from Stormblood, Heavensward and Realm Reborn eras…(even then I couldn’t stick to one race/sex).

All good pics, as usual, Vince, but I really like the last one with the floating sword and cards (?).

Nostalgic, you say? So you want some old 4:3 screenshots, hm?

I already posted my best shots from way back when a huge airship (called the Zephyr Sanctum, made of bamboo, sails, ropes and magic of course, to keep it all afloat) was still docked at the Labyrinthine Cliffs. (GW2)

So how about I raise the nostalgia level with pixelated gras? ;P

P.S. Ouch, to that “Hot Topic employees”-burn! XD

You had pixels in your eyes and couldn’t see to spell, Miol. It’s not your fault! :-)

Thanks for the pic!

Playing a game about being in a aquarium during a prolonged disaster smells much better than actually being there.

Everywhere I look I am imaging all the horrible smells – and this is from a guy that worked at a meat packing plant (aka hog butchering at a count of ~13k a day).

-Oh I also lived and worked in Baltimore …..

“Sensors detect a Baltimore burn, captain!” :-D

I love aquariums, fish-smelly or not, so thank you for the pic.

Also — my condolences on working at a meat-packing plant, sir. That had to be hard on the psyche after a while.

As a farmer’s grandson, I am not anti-meat, but I do have issues with the way modern corporations mass-prepare meat for public consumption. There are better ways to handle it all, when profit isn’t the only concern, I think.

So it goes …

Be well!

I do miss when STO sets out to do their own thing or engage in a bit of Trek Nerding, like these amazing NX-01 Refits, patterned after Doug Drexler’s own design.
Hopefully, with Picard coming out, we can get away from the DSC ships and back to some good old 25th Century fun (or very, very late 24th if it’s Picard based ships).

PS: Ever notice that the Guardian of Forever in STO features an image from In A Mirror, Darkly?

Speaking of the Guardian of Forever, I can’t believe they removed those two missions. Did they take them out of the Klingon War arc and put them somewhere else? They were two of the best mission in STO. And yeah, Through a Mirror Darkly is a great Enterprise episode. Producer Manny Coto was very much getting Enterprise back on track when it was cancelled.

BTW, I’m kind of surprised how much I’ve enjoyed the STO Risa Summer event. For me it’s the perfect mmo holiday…..beautiful environs, relaxing, and non-stressful activities. I enjoyed it a lot more than the GW2 holiday events.

They removed them to remaster them. They do need it. The Guardian’s voice acting was pure cheese.

I hear ya. The trouble with that, however, is sometimes the story episodes have been worse after ‘remastering’.

That voiceover was pure pain for me as a fan — I tell ya, you could almost hear the original voice “actor” smirking at how “high-larious” he thought he was being, all the way through. Ouch.

Aye, I agree. Coto and his people don’t get nearly enough credit for what they tried to do. The fourth season is arguably ENT’s best (minus the first and last episodes of the season). That atrocious finale apparently has a half-life longer than nuclear waste. It never stops causing damage to the viewer. You can smell the stench from orbit. And that wasn’t Coto, as I’m sure you know.

Cheers,
