Global Chat: New World might be worth the wait

One opinion I’ve seen echoed across many corners of our community is that New World is actually shaping up to be a pretty decent MMO. This is especially surprising considering the lengthy delay to 2021, but the recent preview event made several converts, including Belghast from Tales of the Aggronaut.

New World was not a game I expected to like,” he said. “However after having played it for a significant number of hours and through multiple tests I am really looking forward to it launching. They are making some big gambles by constraining the player to largely interact with a specific settlement, but it might also create a game with multiple rich player environments rather than a single vibrant city.”

Roger from Contains Moderate Peril wasn’t quite as enamored with the preview, noting, “The quests are somewhat arbitrary and clearly show how that they’ve been added at a later date to facilitate a change in the game’s direction.”

Priest with a Cause: Happy birthday to WoW Classic

“It’s a bit hard to say what the population is like now. Anecdotally, even the ‘medium’ server I play on seems very busy at all times, but as the saying goes, the plural of anecdotes is not data. Blizzard stopped releasing sub numbers years ago, and even if they still did we wouldn’t know how many of those subs can be attributed to Classic vs. retail. I do consider it telling though that Classic was called out positively in three out of four of their last quarterly earnings calls.”

Why I Game: LitRPG, where fictional meets MMORPGs

“LitRPG, to me, seems to be written by a generation of people who have less background in books per se, but whose growing-up experience has been the odd physical and virtual blend of always being on the internet, always having social media around, always playing some form of video game. Little wonder that their real world selves merge with their digital selves, and this craving need to resolve the paradox.”

The Friendly Necromancer: Feeling directionless in Project Gorgon and finding direction

“The Spirit Fox is in its ‘alpha’ phase, so to speak. The developers said that things will be changing on the class in the near future, and there are some oversights: there’s currently no ‘beast speech’ for the class, there’s no alchemy damage boost potion, there’s no synergy levels, higher qualities of Bounceweed don’t have movement benefits, some of the skills behave a little strangely… I’m sure things will change. ”

Blessings of Kings: The problem with Battle for Azeroth’s story part 1

“Unlike a lot of forum posters, I actually think WoW’s writers are pretty good. There are a lot really well done small stories and small moments in BfA. For example, I loved the work they did with Jaina, at least until the aftermath of attack on Ogrimmar. However, the writers also have a tendency to make really big, bone-headed mistakes. These mistakes are so huge, that they wipe out all the good that has been done, has been built up.”

Mailvatar: I like having stuff to do, but I hate dailies

“You see, almost no mission in Warframe has a cooldown or other form of time-gated restriction to entry. Ran a mission and didn’t get what you want? Just run it again if you like. And again. And again.”

Chasing Dings: A match of mahjong in FFXIV

“I’m still so pumped from Wednesday’s game night. I just want to play more Mahjong. Luckily, FFXIV is always there to help with that need. I’m still a novice, an absolute beginner, so I sat down at the beginner board and the game gave me some AI opponents to play with.”

Every day there are tons of terrific, insightful, and unusual articles posted across the MMO gaming blogosphere — and every day, Justin reads as many as he can. Global Chat is a sampling of noteworthy essays, rants, and guides from the past few weeks of MMO discourse.
