One of the very few MMORPGs that my wife and I ever played together was Wizard101, and I think most of that time involved yelling across the room, “Come over HERE! No, HERE! Argh, watch out for that guy!” We are two very different types of players, let me just put it at that.
Still, seeing this picture from Valorie made me feel a little nostalgic. The cartoony look of the game, its kid-friendly environment, and its interesting combat system have always impressed me.
“Here is my wizard casting her first healing spell during the tutorial,” Valorie writes. And thus, the unstoppable SpellPlague was born, a magical miasma that has claimed six million lives across the Spiral and counting.
“Had an interesting moment in Star Wars: The Old Republic today that I thought was worth sharing,” Tyler submitted. “After accidentally pulling what appeared to be half the mobs on Voss, I was running an fumes and activated my out of combat self-heal. What I didn’t realize was that for some reason my companion at the time, Nadia Grell, was standing nearly on top of me. The animation for my heal then aligned such that it looked as if my Jedi was giving her a hug, the power of the Force surrounding them both. It’s also worth noting I’m currently trying to romance Nadia. It was… kind of sweet, honestly. Or as sweet as a random graphical bug in a video game can be, anyway.”
Reader Dajhryne shared this shot of The Secret World’s version of the cabin in the woods. I have to say, whoever built this claptrap shack should be either hired to Tim Burton’s future movie set constructions or convinced to enter a new line of work.
“Here’s a pic I took in Champions Online with two of my old supergroup mates,” posted Robenix. “It was kinda like a reunion! From left to right, it’s Invincibelle, Wheelman (me!), and Captain Adamant.”
Would you hate me if I said that I always preferred Champions’ visual style to City of Heroes? For all the grief that this game gets, I think it nailed the comic book look.
Reader IamTaemys responded to my request for guild group shots by posting this picture from nearly two decades ago!
“Here is our clan meeting in Ultima Online from about 1999, I think. As you can see, someone died during the course of discussion (as was the norm). I’m the mage in the grey cloak with the raspberry wizard hat.”
This week’s screenshot challenge is to share your favorite in-game map. Did you play an MMORPG with a terrific map interface? Did it go above functionality to shine in the style department? Let’s see some maps, folks!
