One Shots: Take me home, country roads

I can’t tell if Deekay Plus’ headlining shot from Fallout 76 here is that of a gorgeous West Virginia sunrise — or an in-progress nuclear blast. Either way, props for taking a quick screenshot before a light tanning or severe fallout enuses!

Of course, he couldn’t resist getting that song stuck back in our heads: “Country roads west virginia take me home country roads country roadssssssssss.”

Thank you so much for that.

I was pretty excited to see the entries for last week’s screenshot challenge, which called for readers to submit pictures of places in MMOs that are no longer or have changed significantly.

Hirku started off that challenge with this: “For this week, here are a few memorable moments from my Wandering Isle adventure in World of Warcraft. I guess this shot kind-of qualifies for the challenge in that–as far as I know–there’s no way for me to go back to this place.”

That’s-a big turtle!

“Part of why I fell in love with Guild Wars 2 was due to the feel of the original Lion’s Arch,: said Toy Clown. “It felt like a breathing, pirate city. I found it the most unique settlement of all the MMOs I have played. It was inspiring enough that I created a pirate character and guild. It was so sad when it was rebuilt to look like a… tourist town.”

“Related to this is the removal of the The Secret World Faction Training rooms,” said Hikari. “They’re still there, but (as with many TSW/SWL zones) you see them once and never again. Faction training rooms used to be great additional areas to gather in and without them, I couldn’t have gotten this shot for The Secret Buzz. (Being a photographer is dangerous business).”

How sad was it that when I first saw this picture, I thought those were pretty rose petals?

Katriana takes us way back in time for this one: “It’s not much because I never was much of a screenshot taker, but I did find this pic that shows a bit of the original Freeport in EverQuest. UI elements cropped out and guildies’ names blurred just because.”

How so very far we have come in MMOs! Well, graphically, at least.

I’ve got it, you want it — this week’s screenshot challenge, that is! Our theme this week is “weather in progress,” so submit a pic of weather happening in MMOs, whether that be snow falling, a tornado whipping up, fog descending, or something else!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Considering the title of this week’s One Shots there is no way I could hold back this screen from Elite, having just earned my Sol permit I of course had to visit Earth.
And before you ask, yes, I can see my house from here ;D

Just the other morning my character and her chocobo were out for a snowy ride! It was a celebration of sorts since I was finally able to afford a sweater.

A late and old/new/odd entry – Snowing in Hell…gate London.

I was never sure if this was an MMO before, but it sure isn’t now so I am not sure if this counts. Anywho, the new Steam single player version is my current time sink.

Not sure if this qualifies as weather exactly, but I have a whole bunch of screenshot from some odd event that took place in West Karana in old Everquest sometime back in the early 00s. Forget what the event was about exactly, but it created these cool (for the time) pixel effects everywhere along with chat messages indicating the ground itself was casting spells.

“Weather in progress”…here is Ishgard with some snow (where my character is clearly not wearing the appropriate gear/clothes):

Thursby: You ever been out on the Vallis, Boss? She’s a miracle, she is. A blizzard in a firestorm. All thanks to the magic of rebooted Orokin tech, and… the blood, and the sweat of so many thousands of Solaris.

*Orb Vallis (Fortuna) is located on Venus, which is closer to the sun than Earth, yet covered in snow.

How about nightfall? o.O

(And my only screen of FF XIV I ever took…and in celebration of Mr. Eliot’s favorite Fan Season. <3 )

Sadly, I don’t have any screenshots from the magical moment when I first encountered winter in Everquest. I’m lucky enough I can remember 1999. I do, however, have the moment when my norn mesmer dinged 80 during a rare Tyrian shower.

Also included this week is the unveiling of a retcon of one of my Secret World Legends projects. Just your perfectly normal flight attendant with an M60, Desert Eagles, and a hoverboard.

I read that as “weather in progress”, not “weapons in progress”. o.O
