Betawatch: Torchlight Frontiers’ stress test, Lost Ark’s wild popularity

ahhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Torchlight Frontiers’ alpha stress test kicked off today; PWE is begging y’all to come stress test the servers. Except literally nobody I know got in, even people who applied ages ago, which seems a little weird? Anyhoo. Get in there and wreck some stuff. The rest of us will be scrutinizing the business model plan.

Torchlight Frontiers Closed Alpha starts November 16 and we need as many of you as possible there Day 1 to test every aspect of the Torchlight Frontiers experience. We are looking for feedback and tuning for things like gameplay balance, horizontal progression, loot economy, Forts, multiplayer mechanics, and anything else you come upon while carving your way through hordes of monsters. Most of all, we need YOU, our most hardcore of the hardcore to put our servers through their paces. Melt them down to their very cores until nothing remains but blistered silicon. Make sure our ancestors whisper in hushed tones about the day the Torchlight Frontiers servers fell – and rose again stronger than we could ever imagine.”

Course, that wasn’t the only beta-ish thing happening this week.

  • Lost Ark hit open beta in Korea and is already reportedly ridiculously popular, with hundreds of thousands of players and long queues.
  • Fallout 76 finally emerged from beta. At least on paper.
  • Social art-curation MMO Occupy White Walls hits joined the hallowed halls of Steam’s early access program.
  • Niantic put up what appears to be a testing signup for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
  • Early access MMO Project Gorgon now has a free demo.
  • Legends of Aria mapped out its plans for housing… that you can rent to other humans peoples.
  • Star Citizen pushed out the latest iteration of its alpha to more folks – including non-backers next week during the free-fly.
  • Camelot Unchained got its 64-bit client up and running. Now to get it to us!
  • New World teased the crap out of its alpha map as testing continues.
  • Astroneer made plans to leave early access and launch next year.
  • Valiance Online is making efforts to up its communication.

Did we miss anything? We probably missed something. There’s a lotta games out there, you know. And now, for the regular lineup of MMO-type thingies in some phase of testing that we’re keeping an eye on.

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.
