Global Chat: Does the MMO genre need a good rebranding?

This is not Permea.

As we all seem to love the topic of MMO definitions, it’s with little surprise to see blogs discuss it as well. Contains Moderate Peril asked the question that seems to get asked every so often, which is whether or not the MMORPG needs to be rebranded as something else.

“However, setting linguistics aside, I think there are two very clear reasons why the MMO genre is perceived as being after its ‘best before date.’ One is a matter of context within internet history. The other is a matter of perception. The former is a question of fact. The latter is more complex as perceptions are not always correct. However, mud sticks.”

Game for sale!

Blessing of Kings really doesn’t get World of Warcraft’s trading post: “The Trading Post basically seems to be a MTX in-game shop, only without the MTX. For the F2P games, an in-game shop is a necessity. But it’s almost like Blizzard feels an in-game shop is an actual attraction, in and of itself. Which is madness.”

The EverQuest Show talked with a dev about the creation of the Deepshade zone: “I kind of thought to myself. I know it’s gonna be a cave. It’s gonna be dark, hasn’t been opened in a while. So something was trapped in there. What are we gonna do with that? What would happen?”

Tales of the Aggronaut looks at how New World is trying to reinvent itself: “Essentially Aeternum is the attempt to launch New World on consoles with a clean slate, in order to wipe a bit of the bad taste of the dwindling PC player numbers out of the collective mouths of an audience that may have not actually played the game. Treating this as though it were a new and fresh gameplay experience, is what feels like a last-ditch effort to make this game succeed.”

The Ancient Gaming Noob wonders when WoW Classic’s progression should end: “They could have ended at Wrath. There was a strong argument for keeping the full, vanilla and two expansions, set together as a stand alone environment. Just let that live for however long, merging servers down until it the whole thing was on one RP-PvE server or whatever…. maybe a PvE and a PvP server… and then shutting it down when the numbers got down to four digits… or when they decided to do a full relaunch of The WoW Classic Experienceâ„¢ a few years down the road.”

Inventory Full offered first impressions of Throne and Liberty: “I’m guessing at some point I’ll have to buckle down and make sense of what looks like a very fussy and over-complicated gear-and-skill system but so long as I can get away with not bothering, that’s what I plan to do. I find it unlikely that I’ll stick with Throne and Liberty for long, especially if those rumors about needing to guild and group up are true, but I’m not done yet. I had fun last night, though, and I’m quite keen to carry on and have some more today.”

Going Commando wonders if SWTOR will ever make it to 8.0: “The problem with talking about future expansions for SWTOR is that it has never had what I would call a regular expansion cycle akin to other long-running MMOs, where you can count on a new expansion pack being announced once a year or every other year.”
