The MMOs we lost in 2016

If you thought we lost a lot of MMOs in 2014 and 2015, wait until you see 2016's list.

It's easy to shrug off some of these, like the non-MMORPGs, the games shutting down in far-flung countries, or even Hellgate, which sunsets and revives at least a dozen times a year now.

But others sting. Asheron's Call, due to sunset in January, is probably the smallest MMORPG on the list, but it casts a mighty shadow over the genre and will be deeply missed by veterans. The cancellations of EverQuest Next and Revival still stings. PlanetSide had a long and storied run, while DUST 514 may yet live again. And our youngins will now miss out on introductory games like Super Hero Squad Online and LEGO Minifigures.

Farewell, old friends.

How can you lose something that was never launched?  EQN was just hot air and poorly conceived character art.  It should  never have been the true successor to Norrath.

Glad that DBC shut that abomination down.

Even now I'm still sad over losing Nosgoth.  I'm a hardcore LoK fan and I was absolutely opposed to Nosgoth initally, But after getting in to the game's early Alpha and playing it for a very long time to the point of dumping over 600+ hours and making a few youtube videos on it showing off gameplay, I learned to really love it.  I'm really sad that it got shut down, it helped me discover that I enjoyed third person shooters and over time I actually developed a fondness for first person shooters, an entire genre that (up until Nosgoth) I never really bothered with.

Nosgoth really helped me expand my horizons when I played it.  Seeing it go still hurts, I still watch some of my old youtube videos and reminisce sometimes.

Also Might and Magic: Duel of Champions. Since MO stuff now calls "an MMO" pretty much everything with multiplayer, it fits in the list. Was the best digital CCG imo

So what ended up happening with Firefall?

@shadowblender For me it was more like (as in EQN's death didn't surprise me, but then Revival... q.q):

On the subject of Origins of Malu:

"Good evening,
We have finally got development back under with the team; we will be pushing some updated builds out over the next couple of weeks. Our plan is to target every Wednesday evening while we get things back up to spec. We are not going to make any promises or big announcements until our work is done. The point of this update to set expectations back in line as you see builds being updated.

This is what we can say:
- The engine is back to UE4; Bigworld remains out of our price range
- The app will continue un-purchasable until we are ready to release our news with detailed plans (over the next couple of months)
- We remain that the people who stuck with us will be highly rewarded with looks of goodies

December 22 Patch Notes
- New login screen and user management system
- Fixed action bar bugs
- Engine upgraded to 4.11.2
- Art updates
- Lighting Enhancements on siege

It's been painful road folks but we are not dead and going forward I will do my best to update you every Wednesday.

Merry Xmas and all that,
TK"

Not dead? Doesn't say if they found funding either.

In this meme, "MMOs" can also be substituted for celebrities.

@Qarran A song I've frequently found myself humming over the past forty plus years. Used to hum it while on border patrol in Europe among other places.

@paragonlostinspace @Qarran Lol.  It is catchy.  I never knew the song until I watched Jaws and it along with an unnatural fear of sharks stuck with me.

So much death.

The MMO industry is shrinking back to more sustainable levels, but not wtihout pain. And when I say that I realize how many 2017 releases are just sent to die like Bless, and that we're starting to lose post WoW-era MMOs... can't say that I'm too confident in the future of LotRO and DDO.

Damn, that's a far longer list than i remember : (

Also, seeing Firefall, apparently the entire game (servers, forums, main site etc.) were down for pretty much half of December...but nobody really noticed. A big bummer to hear, but at this point I'm not remotely surprised. I feel like this gif has never really been more relevant, as there may only be dozens of players left -

(also, sauce on the server being down: http://www.mmobomb.com/news/firefall-went-offline-two-weeks-december/)

@Greaterdivinity Every time we report it's over... the maintenance guy China forgot to stop paying for remembers to kick the server, and it's back again and we look like idiots. :D What a sad non-endy end.
