The Daily Grind: How much in-game money are you willing to spend on an MMORPG house?

@that_shaman's jumping puzzle build in GW2's homesteads system

A few weeks back, we did a piece rounding up some of the cool stuff Guild Wars 2 players have been building in Janthir Wilds’ new player housing system. Homesteads are amazing! In fact, this one by @that_shaman caught my eye because it’s both Halloween-themed and a jumping puzzle. It’s spectacular.

But now we need to get real about what something like this costs.

“I think the jumping puzzle cost me about 600 to 700 gold in total,” @that_shaman said on Twitter. That’s a staggering amount of money. Numbers like that are surely nothing to many vets, but they make me back way the heck up and reconsider how much I really want to invest.

And Guild Wars 2 is far from alone. If I consider my housing in Star Wars Galaxies Legends, I’d estimate I have between 1 and 2 billion credits tied up just in my decor. I fully admit this is very stupid and far beyond the vast majority of players. Most of my money in Ultima Online went into housing, too. “Having” a house seems casual, but really decking it out impressively is not for light purses.

On the flip side of that, there’s City of Heroes, where on Homecoming every character can have a custom supergroup base, decorated to the absolute max, for a grand total of nothing dollars. If you want to build without grinding, it’s a sweet spot for MMOs for sure.

How much in-game money are you willing to spend on an MMORPG house? What proportion of your character’s in-game earnings sounds right?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
