Massively OP Podcast Episode 245: BlizzContrite

11

On this week’s show, Bree and Justin delve into the ups, downs, and sideways of BlizzCon 2019. Will Diablo IV be a return to form… or a gory mess? Is Overwatch 2 an actual sequel… or a glorified mod? Will Shadowlands restore faith in World of Warcraft… or put players to sleep? And what was up with that apology, anyway?

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

Great, more speedleveling as the norm. Used to be a day when the Content Locust mindset was a bad thing. Now we want everyone to be a content locust whether you like it or not.

You mean for WoW right? I think the idea is that they are serving two really different audiences: One that is new and wants to play in the new expansion, and one that has already played the other seven expansions 10 times. For both groups, they want to get them to the new content quickly so they can spend more time there. And if anything, this prioritizes alts, since apparently there will be reason to play through each of the four storylines, which is pretty unique (for WoW).

WoW has long had an experience lock, so people who still want to do things the old way (play through every single expansion and zone) and still do it at their own pace. :)

Yeah. SWTOR was the other big one to do it that I have been invested in. At least WoW there is/was the option to turn off the XP gain as I recall.

My thing is, how many years have we complained how the content locusts hurt games, and the whole “rush to end game” thing. And now we have normalized it and complain when it takes more than 5 minutes to gain a level. This at the expense of those who enjoy the journey, whether it’s the first time, or the 10th.

I agree with this. I also think WoW is one of the games that created this problem, since WoW is the game that “starts at endgame”.

I feel that if we allow this all the time, then we’ll always have a completely garbage leveling experience.

Heard everything.

I concur with the assessment of Blizzcon. I just don’t think the thing about leaks was that simple. Kaplan was pissed because Blizzard needs all the hype it can muster. The leaks kinda kill that.

But i thing the highlight for me, for the Blizzcon is that the crowd was tame. They’re learning, and Blizzard is finally realizing they can’t just pull crap outta their asses and offer us like we’ll love it.
