Massively OP Podcast Episode 209: ArenaNet layoffs, Blizzard layoffs, and PlanetSide Arena delays

The most positive statement about anything Daybreak-related I am likely to make all year.

On this week’s show, Bree and Justin boggle over the mass layoffs at ArenaNet and Blizzard, slap Daybreak on the wrist for another Friday evening announcement, tell listeners how they can join the MOP team, and answer a boatload of listener emails!

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

I listened with increasing horror as Bree encouraged GW2 to adopt an ESO model.

Haha, I’m sorry! I don’t particularly want to pay more for GW2 either. OTOH, it’s a model that is working for an equivalently good/popular title. If they aren’t gonna do expansions, and they aren’t going to properly stock their cash shop, they could go a whole year without getting any money from most people, including somebody like me who would buy stuff just to support the company. That’s not sustainable.

If they are going to pivot to putting out new mount/outfit skins every week, then I take it back (and fear for my wallet). But they’ve never done that frequently enough before, and we constantly hear how people want to buy stuff but there’s nothing good on offer. So it seems charging for the storyline content is inevitable given how expensive it is to create. I would rather they charged for it than stopped doing it. :/

I’d totally be willing to pay more, although it sounds like they had been letting the game languish for the benefit of these mysterious ‘other projects.’

They really do ought to consider releasing an expansion every year or so and freshen up the gem store. I just associate the ESO model with triple dipping, $100 houses, weaponized FOMO, and other exploitative tactics.

I’d argue that GW2 has what is probably the most ethical buy to play model out there, and I’d hate to see that go. I also think it would be poorly received by the player base as it would be perceived as taking something away.

Having Bree read my mail might be the greatest thing to happen to me in my adult life.

The Titan idea was just an interesting hypothetical, because they did make the choice to pivot production. I could show you my conspiracy theory board, and all the yarn I’ve strung together to wind up at the conclusion that it MIGHT have been better than Overwatch. I like overwatch, but if you play for ten minutes you know ” it just wasn’t fun” is a lie. It just wasn’t as profitable as the esports market was projected to be…

Before I wind up writing a thesis on my phone, I’ll stop and say thanks for reading my mail!
PS play Foxhole.

I’m really looking forward for whoever will fill Beau’s role, Mr. Hindman was the reason i’m playing MMOs, him and MJ, their passion and positivity is contagious, and i love to read about MMOs that does not find much coverage.

I didn’t mention the MMO name because i wanted a general answer :-) thank you guys.

One more thing, Allied races in WoW, even i feel sick of waiting, but 2 more weeks and we get them … i guess.

I am not unhappy with what Project Titan came to be and usually play Overwatch a couple of hours 3 or 4 times during the week. Prefer to enjoy what is in front of me than speculate on what might have been or hypothetical situations.

Also glad you are feeling better Justin though I am contractually obligated to point out that Bree always seems to manage to do the podcast when she is ill. hehe :p

Yeah, I really like Overwatch. Honestly, playing Overwatch really opened me up to trying more lobby shooters and similar lighter pvp games like Breach, Aftercharge, Lawbreakers (RIP) and so forth.

Quick correction here – when we were talking about last year’s financials, I definitely misspoke! They made $71M in 2018 – not the last quarter. The last quarter was around $14M. (This still should have been enough to run a studio of this size with reasonable salaries and benefits, though.)
