Make My MMO: Day of Dragons bans prominent critics for ‘defamation’ and ‘reverse engineering’

This week in MMO crowdfunding, our eyes are drawn back to Kickstarted survival sandbox Day of Dragons, which made headlines earlier this autumn over accusations from the YouTube and Discord community that the game was a scam and an asset flip, which was met with equally harsh vitriol from the developer. The drama, as MOP reader Xanward pointed out to us, has only continued, as this week the developer dropped a massive (~3700 words) statement on Steam that, among other things, accuses YouTubers IcyCaress and IGP of defamation and reverse engineering (they poked through the code to look at the assets) and announces bans for both. That was followed up by another involved (but not banned) critic cutting ties with the game, noting he’s gotten death threats for playing the game and saying that “the drama alone around the constant shit show of PR management is just not worth my time anymore.” Y I K E S, as they say.

Meanwhile, Temtem dropped a new trailer, Elite Dangerous turned five, our CMA column dipped a toe back into Project Gorgon, and we interviewed the Star Citizen devs about the Argo MOLE. Finally, Monster Sanctuary, which Kickstarted for over €100K, announced the addition of online PvP. It was originally billed as a “monster-taming RPG with party-based combat and metroidvania-like exploration”; it’s not a pure MMO, but it’s edging closer, and you can play it right now on Steam.

Just a few days ago, somebody on twitter was reminiscing about the glory days of the Quake franchise on Q3A’s 20th anniversary, and he criticized the Quake Champions devs for their comparatively sloppy work. He was promptly blocked by their twitter account. Hard to believe devs can be that petty, and that team is part of a much bigger company unlike these guys, they’re supposed to act professional.

That’s just how software devs are. This stuff wouldn’t surprise you if you ever worked in software development. Directly with the devs that is.

While I haven’t worked in the software industry, I’m a linux hobbyist so I have plenty of experience dealing with devs; the thing is those are FOSS devs, who have this sad tendency to believe that just because they release their app for free, they can rule over their github page like they’re goddamn Pol Pot or something. I figured that kind of stuff didn’t happen on the more serious commercial side of software dev, but apparently it does lol

I mean if it’s a developer’s personal account I could understand getting blocked there. Like if I’m salty about WoW I’m not going to @ Ion and the other big devs behind it. Devs don’t always need to be in professional business mode esp. in their personal social media, though obviously they should still be careful about what they say out loud. A quick block though is an easy solution to avoid getting into heated arguments with folks who aren’t happy about things.

The dev of this game needs to just close up shop at this point. If you can’t handle criticism among other things don’t get into a service/entertainment industry at all. They are probably scammers trying to make a quick buck.

Banning for legitimate criticism should never happen. The key here though is legitimate.

Of course you are always entitled to your opinion and if you want to say the game sucks, well you can. Say the game sucks all you want. If you want to launch a major social media campaign about how much the game sucks, well if you want it to gain any traction you must have legitimate grievances with the game, because if you don’t your campaign won’t gain any traction and you’ll just look silly.

I think being hard coded/shadow banned was a chicken shit move by the developer, and that’s going to hurt them in the end.

When people deal with criticism (deserved or not) via anger, instead of simply addressing the issues, they merely ensure that the criticism seems very well deserved indeed.

That is not to deny the emotional response, but instead to say that those who have the ability to step beyond that are the ones who prove that they can be trusted (in general) to handle the problem.
