Who here likes sand? If you like sand, this is your week for Betawatch because first and foremost there are reports that Dune Awakening is sending out beta invitations. Is that sandy enough for you? The game is literally based on Dune; that’s got to be enough sand for dedicated sand-lovers. But if you really want some sand, you can look at Abyss, which is currently sitting at a heck of a lot of negative reviews after players tried the game and apparently told the developers to pound sand.
Do you need yet more sand? Then have some Sand, which is an upcoming game about robot walkers on sand. No word on beta dates or anything yet, but it is still sand-related! Corepunk also wants people to fight over a potential alpha invite, perhaps on a bloody and sand-filled arena? And SMITE 2 has its second alpha weekend starting next week, which is… I mean… some of the deities involved are in sandy places? Sure. That’s almost plausible.
Is that not enough for you? Are you going to be a real Anakin Skywalker about all this sand? Well, that’s disappointing, but we do have some completely sand-free stories in this week’s beta roundup all the same. And there’s a whole list of games in testing below that, some of which likely have only a tenuous connection to sand if any. Seriously. As always, if you notice something in that list which has slipped to a new test phase you can let us know in the comments.
Sand.
We consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s often under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed, nor will games that are NFT/blockchain scams; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions. Finally, we’ll mark games “malingering” if they’ve been in a certain tier of development for a long time with no clear path to launch.

Yes, MMO gamers, you too can perform the unpaid quality-control work otherwise known as game testing! Check out Massively Overpowered’s Betawatch every week for a run-down of MMOs that are still on the road to launch, even if they appear to have set up a permanent residence in a shed called early access.
