I did a little double-take when I read SuperData’s November 2018 games industry revenue ranking piece today, and not because the title and intro makes the industry look grim. No, it’s because there are no Blizzard titles to be found. That may not surprise you, given that Overwatch dropped off last month, when SuperData characterized it as a “disappointing run” with “five consecutive months of year-over-year declines.”
But I wasn’t expecting World of Warcraft to vanish too; it’s been consistently in the top 10 on PC in 2018 and past years, even rising to #2 – ahead of League of Legends – in August. But it’s gone from the top 10 now, as the list has seen quite a shakeup, with the re-entry of DOTA 2, LOL back on top, and… the Sims 4 entering at 7. OK then.
On the console side, Red Dead Redemption 2 inched up to the top slot, with Fallout 76 in fifth place (again, that’s console; Fallout didn’t make the PC list). SuperData wasn’t too impressed with Destiny 2 either.
“Destiny 2′s Forsaken boost was short lived. We estimate additional content revenue for Destiny 2 dropped 63% year-over-year. Overall, engagement and monetization seem to have reverted back to the same levels last seen before the launch of the Forsaken DLC in September.”
