Make My MMO: Temtem’s early access, Dual Universe’s metaverse

5

This week in MMO crowdfunding, Dual Universe’s Jean-Christoph Baillie chatted up GamesIndustry.biz about the development of the game, suggesting a game that’s essentially a metaverse that relies on player-generated content but is a true game, unlike predecessors like Second Life. “This is a tradition that goes back as far as I can remember in science fiction,” he says. “It’s not a new idea. But one thing that’s central to making this work is technology. It’s been six years. The technology we’ve developed is absolutely crazy complex. We have had some of the best ingenious PhDs working on that for several years. I’m not saying nobody can do it, but it’s not something you can do in your garage in two days. It’s really complex.”

Meanwhile, Albion Online’s Queen update rolled out to players, Temtem hit early access (though it’s been a bumpy, buggy ride, it’s still a big Kickstarter MMO success story!), Crowfall previewed its new spellbook, Chronicles of Elyria retracted art it had implied was its own, and Zenith began teasing its pre-alpha.

Read on for more on what’s been up with MMO crowdfunding over the last week, plus our roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following!

Yes, some crowdfunded MMOs most definitely do succeed. But others crash and burn, and you need to hear about the whole spectrum of games that sought your money early in exchange for the promise of input and transparency. And that’s exactly what Make My MMO does every Saturday. Help us keep ’em accountable, would ya?

I like DU and I believe it has potential to be the best space mmo. It has of course way to go, but seems to be on right track. Problem is excludes by design due to reqs anything that doesnt have a specific generation i3 or newer so probably I will need to replace the CPU in one of my PCs in the near future or just pass on the game for now(more likely) but i am still happy they move forward

How are you playing PC games with less than a Core i3?

Easily, I dont even have an latency related to graphs. I got a system that has an intel quad core and 8gb ram, onboard graphs and ssd(somewhat small box, cubic) and an AMD with AM3+ 3.1ghz triple core, 8gb and 3gb vram AMD R7 240. Seriously the only game I got issues because its a memory hog is SotA. I play ESO, ED, SWTOR, STO, EVE and Battletech and Mechwarriors 5 Mercs lately. Each and everyone with ease. Also tried BDO and was running fairly well at 35+ FPS.

Keep in mind for DU, that it seems to support most I3, not all and generally its req is a bit unique among games and totally unique to mmo on the commands set it asks to be supported

Temtem’s early hiccups are over, the server is basically running smooth and nice now, and getting on is usually quick and queueless instead of finding a 6k+ queue.

There is a lot still to be done in the game. It’s working to play, but it’s not finished. If you’re looking for a more fleshed out version with all the content and all the islands and stuff, you should wait a while.

It is playable and even fun, but it is real Early Access and unfinished. If I could go back in time seeing the stuff that needs to still be done, I’d probably wait to start playing. I’ll probably put it on pause sometime along and wait for the game to move further along in development before going back.

I would say queues is hardly news on a new game launch or a reboot of a game as logically many people want to try out. The typical matter is queues continue to be a problem for many weeks(example AA:Unchained took over a month). That and I start to believe Early Access is pretty much closed beta of the old times, however, back then it was too uncommon to charge people to buy a beta version game
