In fewer than two weeks, Guild Wars 2 is getting something we’ve never had before in the game: boats. In fact, you might even say that boats are a key theme for MMORPGs in 2022, as they feature prominently in Lost Ark and Elder Scrolls Online this year as well.
These games are joining a long list of MMORPGs that already have them. I think the first time I ever saw a boat in an MMO, it was in Ultima Online, as people had pulled their boats up to the shore near Britain and clogged the waterways with their little rowboats in order to score some extra nearby storage from their hulls. And that’s nothing compared to the shenanigans people get up to with boats in ArcheAge, literally mucking around with the game’s physics and collision and dragging them around on land and over buildings.
