The Mop Up: FEAR is dead edition

The MMO industry moves along at the speed of information, and sometimes we’re deluged with so much news here at Massively Overpowered that some of it gets backlogged. That’s why there’s The MOP Up: a weekly compilation of smaller MMO stories and videos that you won’t want to miss.

This week we’ll mourn FEAR Online’s passing, check out Atlantica Online’s latest mercenary, enjoy an intergalactic Star Citizen comic, and check out footage of Torchlight Mobile.

Sunsets

  • FEAR Online is D.O.A., as the multiplayer online shooter shut down a while back on May 13th. Didn’t notice, did you? [MMO Fallout]

Patches

  • Atlantica Online: There’s a new mercenary to recruit — the Dryad. This nature-loving creature uses whips to attack and can heal the group at will. Atlantica is hosting a garden event for the month to celebrate the addition. [Introducing the Dryad]
  • Marvel Heroes: Patch 1.65 brought in a lot of positive fixes for both Jean Grey and Ant-Man while adding a few new toys for the Fantastic Four. [Patch notes]

Odds & Ends

  • Dark Age of Camelot’s August newsletter is out and covers topics such as the next chapter of the Otherworlds campaign and a preview of the new website. [Newsletter]
  • Dream of Mirror Online (DOMO) is landing on Steam on August 14th. [MMO Bomb]
  • Chinese developer 37wan has secured the rights to develop a web game based on Lineage II. Note that this is not the mobile game, which is also in development. [MMO Culture]
  • Rust had a “server performance breakthrough” lately and has been working adding various neat features like new wall types, more vehicles, and player-designed clothing. [Rust. Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]
  • Adrian Nitisor is writing and inking a Star Citizen black-and-white webcomic called Hunter. [Hunter. Thanks to Viking for the tip!]

Videos

Like many of you, we can’t wait to get our hands on Torchlight Mobile. While its launch is still a bit away, visitors to Gamescom were able to give it a test-drive. Check it out! [2P.com. Thanks to Carson for the tip!]

Perfect World International recently launched its Riptide update, stocked full of cool features like a new dungeon, more quests, a Judgment mode instance, and a bufftastic aura system. Check out the announcement video below:

Want to learn how to design a zombie-proof base in H1Z1? YouTuber Desolacer has the 13th entry in a series on how to make a base to weather the apocalypse:

Need to brush up on your Lord of the Rings Online backstory? A terrific new lore series has been launched, with the first episode showcasing the Shire. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Apparently there’s an entire animated series being made from the Dragon Nest franchise. Don’t you wish your favorite MMO got a cartoon made from it too? Here’s the Chinese trailer via MMO Culture:

MetaDune Gurnlei Even if the ending kinda sucked and it was shorter than the first game, 2 was still pretty good, but I wouldn’t call 3 a “bad” game at all, at it’s worst it was still pretty decent.

usagizero SaloMaya Gurnlei I spent lots and lots of hours on the multiplayer demo alone, I was already sold with the single player demo, but the MP demo was not just the icing on an already delicious cake, it almost felt like I was having 2 delicious cakes with icing on it’s top, a deal sweetened by the great support Monolith gave it for a couple of years, giving it extra maps, mod support, widescreen support (I had a laptop with widescreen support in 2005) and the release of Combat, wich boosted the player base a lot.

If the master servers weren’t shut down, Id probably still be playing it every now and then toay, now THAT’S a sunset worth mourning for, not this piece of shit bearing the name and shitting all over it.

Bullwraith I’m a dramatic guy! And it was definitely looking sparse at the turn of the year.

Every MMO should have a determined pink hair character.

Knowing Blizzard, they probably did try it, but never released it externally because it wasn’t good enough.

SaloMaya Gurnlei I never played it, but when i saw it announced i wondered why it wasn’t just like the multiplayer in the first game, which i did play, and actually enjoyed a good deal.

SirMysk wolfyseyes I’m still surprised Blizzard hasn’t tried to do that, in some form or another. They have all the tools, and it probably wouldn’t do too bad. Wildstar really does look like it would work too though, the style really fits.

Gurnlei The first game’s multiplayer was actually pretty darn good, it’s a shame FEAR Online was a poor microtransation driven bastardization of the first game’s multiplayer.

FEAR Online got shut down?, good fucking riddance, bring FEAR Conbat back WB, that one is a thousand times better and it’s actually FREE, without any microtransaction bullshit.

wolfyseyes Their advertisements were entertaining. If nothing else they could do a popular machinama series.
