Global Chat: Do you suffer from FOMO when an MMO expansion comes out?

With Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker on the horizon, there’s an undeniable wave of FOMO — fear of missing out — that’s sweeping through the MMORPG community. MMO blog Leo’s Life explores why this seems to happen around every big game expansion.

“I get the idea of FOMO when something new is coming, because we’ve often been trained that the stuff we are doing now won’t be relevant later. Maybe there’s a mount or some cool looking gear to pick up that just won’t be there. I guess the question then comes, ‘Does it really matter?,’ and then you kind of realize it doesn’t.”

Altar of Gaming created a guide to help Albion Online players navigate the ins and outs of working with personal islands: “Islands in Albion Online constitute of instanced areas where players can build crafting stations, houses and farms, as well as decorate to their heart’s content! There are two different types of islands, personal islands and guild islands, and while they share many similarities, there are also some core differences.”

Gamer Reverie enjoyed sharing favorite music tracks from RIFT: “While RIFT has since been bought by Gamigo and exists in a sort of maintenance mode of operation, I still log in almost every day for the daily calendar, minions, and special events. The little guild I run now is full of ghosts, but I’m not yet ready to let go.”

Inventory Full ventured into the recently launched Elyon but didn’t make it past the tutorial: “I didn’t instantly detest Elyon the way five minutes in TERA made my skin crawl but it was a bit of a slog. If I had absolutely nothing new to entertain me right now I’d probably carry on for a while but as things are I suspect all I’m going to see of the game for the foreseeable future is the tutorial.”

Going Commando examined how BioWare is changing its approach to gear with SWTOR’s newest expansion: “My overall impression of that blog is best summed up as this new system being a sidegrade from Onslaught’s, getting rid of some issues while introducing others, and I’m not sure whether I’ll like it.”

Many Welps is having a good time in the resurrected Fallen Earth: “My personal favorite quest here was Collection Call, where Ricky Vargas asks you to go around town and kill people who haven’t paid their debts. There’s no build-up to this, no reason you should do what this guy says, but this is the wasteland and when some random guy in a side alley says he’ll pay you 70 chips to kill three people, you just gotta do it.”

And finally, The Friendly Necromancer shared some recent adventures in Runes of Magic: “In fact, there’s a whole quest line in Dust Devil Canyon that involves figuring out why exactly the harpies are so gosh dang murderous? As it turns out, it’s because they’re drunk on evil crow blood and fermented berries… at least that’s what I gathered from the quest text.”

Every day there are tons of terrific, insightful, and unusual articles posted across the MMO gaming blogosphere — and every day, Justin reads as many as he can. Global Chat is a sampling of noteworthy essays, rants, and guides from the past few weeks of MMO discourse.
