One Shots: Filtered to perfection

I don’t usually spend a lot of time running pictures through filters, but it’s pretty cool when I see someone doing this that knows what they’re doing.

Spider has it covered with a game that hasn’t shown up in this column so far, probably because it has yet to release: “Disclaimer: not a leak! I cut up, copied, and pasted together parts of officially released New World screenshots and applied a generous dose of filter after filter after filter for my new desktop background. Thought you might get a kick out of it. Been bored, waiting for a new game, making Frankenstein screenshots to amuse myself.”

There are worse ways of spending your time!

Last week’s screenshot challenge was to show areas in MMOs that are Halloween “all year round.” Reader John thinks that RIFT fits the bill here, especially with zones like Gloamwood. Would you agree?

KingCrazy took a joyride in Destiny 2: “Here we see my ship, the Queen of Hearts, as I assemble with my ad-hoc fireteam to take on a formidable group of opponents in an underground contest we call Gambit.

“On and on they soared, the rounds of our arms! The Vex fell as if the full might of the Tower had been brought to bear against them. Better Devils sung in my hands. A portal opened, and I grabbed the heavy ammo needed for my trusty grenade launcher before jumping right in. There they were, our opponents who had performed so well, and they knew an intruder was in their midst. My ghost showed me the number of motes each of them held, and I headed for the chart leader, whose fifteen motes could effectively seal our destiny should he manage to bank them. Oh! How sweet the melody of explosive death! His teammates wept, and another one fell to my assault.”

“Places that seem Hallowe’en spooky all the time?” asked Mysecretid. “My thoughts immediately went to the planet Nathema in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Nathema is introduced as a desolate, windswept ruin of a world, now hosting only one structure — an abandoned ‘sanitarium’ complex that was always more torture chamber than medical refuge. This was the place the Sith Emperor Valkorian sent his Force-powerful, but dangerous daughter, Vaylin, to be mentally ‘conditioned’ as a child.

“The in-game evidence suggests that Vaylin was always a broken person, even as a child — but nothing on the horrific world of Nathema could’ve ever been about repairing her damage. I took my Sith-blooded Jedi Guardian back to Nathema for these screenshots. A house of horrors, indeed.”

Rafael has a better idea for a spooky tour: “Halloween all year? Easy peasy. The Highland Necropolis in Blade and Soul. Unfortunately, the Dark Realm’s forces poured into this once beautiful and lush area after a prince tried to make himself emperor. Oh, it is a long story complete with fratricide and betrayal. The net-net, demons and the undead have a place to live in the earthly realm. Oddly enough, this dark hoard does seem to enjoy the holidays.”

Neverwinter’s recent theme park ride-like quest made me think of other MMOs that have, at various times, given us the equivalent of an amusement park thrill or dark ride. Do you have any of these? Share for this week’s screenshot challenge!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!
