One Shots: Riding the unicorn charge into 2018

That’s it, folks. It’s time to put the wraps on the bumpy, odd year that was 2017 and get ready to flip our calendars to the pristine landscape of 2018. While the future of MMOs always holds uncertainy, one thing we know for sure: We’re going to screenshot the heck out of it.

To put a bow on 2017, I asked Massively OP readers to submit their absolute best screenshot from this past year — and the community took up the task with gusto. We’ll start things off today with Hugmonster showing us what a dignified, serious game Guild Wars 2 can be.

“My best screenshot of the year? Obviously me launching a stampede of rainbow unicorns!” he shared.

“Here’s the best I got, not just for 2017 but forevah,” said Hirku. “I think this nicely sums up the type of character I’ve played, from The Secret World to The Old Republic to World of Warcraft.”

Nevermind devastating tidal forces, having a giant planet loom in the sky is great for picture-taking opportunities!

“I’ve enjoyed taking screenshots for many years, for personal use. For this column, I’ve tried making them a bit more relevant. Justin was kind enough to select a few of mine over the course of the year, and I’m grateful,” said Rees Racer.

Fun fact: I pick nothing! I have a specially trained monkey who sits here and jabs at the screen with various hoots that take the pressure off me choosing.

“I don’t think War Thunder is a proper MMORPG,” he continued, “but this site covers many games on the periphery, including this one. I do know the game has provided me with a great many opportunities for fantastics sights. In my venerable Spitfire Mk II, a quick ‘test-fire’ of the 8×7.7mm wing-mounted Browning machine guns seemed a good idea…just as the sun was rising over the Atlantic. I just like the elegance of this aircraft in the shot and simplicity of composition. It may not be my ‘best’ screenshot of the year, but it is my favourite.”

“Nothing screams ‘jubilation!’ quite like a Lalafell riding (excuse me, flying) a Christmas outfitted bear through a war torn (but now free, thank you very much) nation. For real,” said Vincent.

I’ll consider this Final Fantasy XIV’s most enduring legacy and a symbol of video game greatness that will endure for generations to come.

“Here is a shot of my trusty, well-worn Asp Explorer cruising just above the ice rings of Froarks WX-U d2-2471 7 a in Elite: Dangerous,” said CMDR Crow. “My AspX is battered from repeated hyperspace jumps and scooping incredibly bright and hot star-stuffs for fuel. I took a moment to investigate the large rings of a further icy planet, not disappointed by the gorgeous view. To this day, a little over eight months later, I am still the only individual who has ever been in this system. This sight is a sight that only my own eyes have ever seen in person, and the best I can do is to provide a picture of this microscopic, beautiful corner of our vast, incomprehensibly large universe.”
